Hello All! I am new to the board my name is Mathew Solnik. I recently aquired a 8week old Presa Canario pup. He has excellent prey drive and good nerves. My question is what should I do about his mouthing? He is VERY mouthy and has a very strong grip/bite. But my hands/arms/feet/etc are starting to feel it they look like pin cusions. I have been trying to distract him to tugs/toys etc but he seems to prefer my hands/pants/etc. What do yall recommend I do about this? Should I yelp so he stops biting? Or do I have to put up with this until he is out of his mouthing stage? Thanks for all the help!
Although many people with lots more expierience than me will tell you not to inhibit the pups biting, I've never had a problem with telling any new pups that mine and the families hands are off limits. My GSD has learned to be very gentle with me, the wife, kids and grandkids. It hasn't stopped him from hitting like a truck, with a full grip on the sleeve. That may be totally wrong advice for a PPD, but, in my case, house manners haven't had any effect on his bite work.
I'm not convinced that puppy mouthing/biting is a stage that the pup will grow out of. I personally would not risk it with a dog that most will identify as a "pitbull."
If your pup is going to be a pet, yelping like a puppy and continueing to redirect to a tug/toy are appropriate.
If this dog is a protection or sport prospect I am not the person to offer advice!
I have rasied a few pups and even though my wardrobe has suffered, they have all backed off. In a few weeks his interests will change beyond what is in a 5 foot radius of you anyway. As he becomes more independent you will be the victim a lot less.
I was in the same situation and it was very irritating to me my wife and 3 small girls but he did grow out of it. I got him at 7 weeks old he is 7 months now; @ around 6 months of age he stopped mouthing.
This topic got me to thinking, hopefully one of you pros can answer
Would it harm any to simply redirect to an acceptable toy/tug without any corrections or change in behavior? Would it be detrimental to the training of a PPD or sport dog or would it have any effect at all?
