Is it Okay for me to play 'tug-o-war' with my puppy? I never let him win the game, I always win either by distracting him or by taking the toy out of his mouth ( I don't yank it out). Before bedtime we always have half an hour play and he loves to fetch but in between he likes to play 'tug'. Will this create problems of dominance when he's older and if the advice is to stop playing it are there any suggestions of indoor play games?
My Dane pup also likes to throw his paw at you, lean on you or just simply park his butt on any part of you he can. I've been told that this behaviour is typical of a Dane.
He isn't doing any harm but should this also be discouraged?
Your opinions are appreciated.

Doesn`t seem like this is a real good idea considering how big he`ll be when he gets older. Boxers do that too but our boxer has always been taught that putting any force behind it results in people walking away from him. Tug is okay as long as you teach a command that means give up the toy. Give it or drop it work well.

You can play tug per the Building Drive Focus and Grip - this is positive, productive, teaches the dog self-control and develops his bond with you. Oherwise, I consider tug a dangerous game and it is outlawed in my house. (My husband broke that rule once and got bitten.)
Never allow a dog to beg and demand attention by pawing, leaning or sitting on you. Say "no," require the dog to sit and then pet him.

yeah, sitting on you is dominant, he knows where his butt is.
don't let him do that, as for pawing, if your playing, there's likely to be some of that, but otherwise, discourage it.
my $.02, discounted 100%!

I gotta ask, what sort of problems can I have with pawing beside not looking proffesional as my training director pointed out. Max uses his paw to get my attention for "I gotta go P" or "Mom's set the thermostat too high again and I'm about to melt." Sometimes its "That food on your plate looks very interesting". but a quick Pfui and he moves on. I've also set up some parlor tricks with pawing. But if there is something detrimental to safety or creat behaviour problems later let me know.

Me too, please. My dogs paw my ankle or foot when I'm at the computer to tell me there is unexpected need for a trip outside.

well, if the nails get to need clipping, depending upon the
strength exerted, and the flesh or clothing exposed to the pawing, it cold leave a mark. A nose nudge works as well
for mine, and I have a leather strap with sleighbells hung on the doorknob, they soon learn how to ring it, with virtually no effort.

I like that idea *very* much. Thanks!
This is a soft touch on my foot/ankle, but I like that "doorbell" idea better.

Tug is a good game, teaches confidence and is really fun. It's also a great reward during obedience. This is the only time one of my dogs can growl and get away with it. However like they said, be sure you can follow up on being a 'pack leader' in all other aspects of your day to day life (the dog knows you're controlling it and that you have power over him). After the game I take the tug away to show the dog it's mine anyway, I also randomly do 'outs' and then reward the dog for giving up. All in all the dog has the idea that the only reason things are happening the way they are is because I LET them happen.

Thankyou to everyone for the advice given. The bell sounds like a great idea! To think where I'd be now if I hadn't found this site and everyone who knows a lot more than I do giving their advice freely and friendly- Cheers!
