I have a very fast growing puppy (Gt.Dane) who shortly after coming to me had a tummy bug and lost some weight with 'going' all the time. He's been fine now for about 5 weeks yet I still haven't noticed him gaining back what he lost even though obviously he's growing fast. My vet commented that she would like to see him put a bit on (his ribcage is clearly visible) but I'm finding it really hard as generally large dog breeders say to keep the protein levels low,to prevent growth problems (so that's saying don't add meat etc to his kibble)- the nutritionists say don't feed extra because that will cause digestive problems (even though I have given him 10-20% extra and nothings happened). I know you should keep your dogs lean but I think he's a little too lean. He is a very lively, happy dog so should I not be too concerned about this? Can anyone give me some advice?
Thankyou
Get him on RAW Lisa. It's the best thing for him. All my dogs I have had, including puppies have been on it. Ed has good articles on it. Also there are books you can read regarding it. You could also search the board for old threads on it.....there are probobly alot.
I wouldnt mix raw with kibble though. Dogs digest kibble and raw in different ways.
As an alternative you can...... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
I had the same problem with my female GSD. Unknown to me she had coxcidia. Thanks to the breeder. Who didnt tell me. It was a battle. At 10 months you could really seee her ribs. Then all of the sudden she started putting on weight.I have seen many GD dogs and they seem to be lean in the waist area but nice in the chest. Give your puppy a chance. Was the bitch thin? raw chicken livers and yogurt between her normal ration helped to get her weight up. Good luck.
Allen - My pup had Isospora which is a form of coccidia and the vet said he'd come to me with it -it's terrible, but he's had the treatment for it and is fine now, I'm probably being a little impatient and as a lot have said it's harder to gain the extra because he's growing at an incredible speed anyway. The breeder mentioned yoghurt, so I might give that a try too and thanks very much for your advice.
Well I have switched him to raw (2 weeks ago) and he has already started to gain weight and he also had dry skin/dandruff which has completely gone and he has a lovely soft and shiny coat now.
I hold my hands up!!! You were right <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
I am really happy in his improvements, so much so my other 2 dogs made the switch a few days ago and even my mum's made the switch with her dog. The butcher thinks it's great and loves us!!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
