What kind of side affects is your dog having? We had our last dog on it without any problems and we were planning on getting it for our new dog but if you are having problems maybe we should consider looking into something different. Is there another brand you would recommend? I hope everything is ok and your dog don't have any lasting affects
I don't want anyone to be alarmed. It could just be coincedence. The past 2 months the day after I gave my dog his heartworm pill, he vomited a few times. Now this month he did the same thing and also displayed VERY un-characteristic aggressive behavior towards my wife. I read that the rare side effects include vomiting along with possible nuerological side-effects. My vet feels that this is not related to the medication. I was just curious. If you have had no problems please keep doing what you are doing. I understand that side effects are pretty rare.
we've never seen any side effects like you have, but we've seen a few. On the day that they get the pill, they seem to act a little "punkish" (not wanting to do much and don't listen too well either). But that's about as far as ours have gone with any reaction, any other day, they're competing to see who gets to be the one to work first.
Of course your vet doesn't think it is the meds! -he prescribed them! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> You are the one that is living with your dog and if you think there is something amiss I would go with your gut on this one and change his meds. There are a lot of wormers and heartworm prevention products that have been on the market longer that this one and it is not that much of a bother to administer two products instead of one. I won't use Interceptor because of the price (too many dogs make it$$$$)and also my vet wasn't that impressed with it and recommended against using it when I originally asked about it.
Well my gut says the same thing but when it comes to my dogs and my kids I tend to be a bit on the paranoid side. As far as your comment on the vet...I don't think that my vet has that kind of an ego or stubborn streak in him. For something as simple as switching medication, I'm certain he would say so if he felt that way. I appreciate your response.

As far as your comment on the vet...I don't think that my vet has that kind of an ego or stubborn streak in him. We're the same way, when it comes to our dogs or children, we get worried at the slightest sign. I'm usually very laid back and calm, so when I tell my wife to take one of the dogs to the vet, she knows I'm not playing around. We've got a pretty good vet here too, he knows we like to feed a raw diet (says that it's better than kibble, but not many people are interested in taking the time to learn about nutrition and prepare the meals), sometimes complains because he hardly ever sees us bring a sick animal (compared to most of his other patrons), and gives us advice on holistic medicines (as he thinks we're more inclined to try them first, from his observations of our training schedules, seeing our dogs pedigrees, and knowing how we feed and care for them). So, you're not in the boat alone on this one. I say if your gut tells you it's not right, follow your gut, and if your vet is worth his money, he will give you the best advice for an alternate medication.
I've used Interceptor as a heartworm prevention for years with no problems. I tend to prefer this medication over others because of the added benefits of additional parasite control.
In addition to this product being a prevention; it can also be used as an alternate treatment for heartworm disease. Given year round..the medication will not only kill off the adult larve but will also kill the baby swimers. Cost wise.. it's very affordable..especially when you have the cooperation of a vet who is sympathatic to a multi dog household.
