My new pup is 11 weeks old and when I walk her outside to play and use the bathroom she is bitting and nipping at my pants and shoes, I am worried by correcting her to much on this it will hurt her prey drive, am I wrong?
She is going to do narcotics detection work, she had a mid level drive when I got her and I have got her drive up a little higher and do not want to lower it by correcting her to much on this.
A good detection dog needs drive out the ying yang.... work on building it so in a few months an honest determination can be made if the dog is cut out for detection work. I'd knock off the corrections for a few months and focus on drive building.
i agree with Matt. a good detection dog has to have a butt load off drive. i shounds like your doing good by building it but no way would i correct her. i would, personnaly, tell her good. it may hurt a little but telling her no she is gonna start to think she is not allowed to bite at all and kill her prey drive. stick in there, the biting your pant thing won't last to much longer and then you will be glad you did.
Great thanks for the advice, I will let her keep doing it. After watching the dogs in Ed's narcotics dvd I not sure she will have the drive those dog's have, but she is still young...
