Christmas day my dog had a run in with a tangle of barbed wire (he jumped a sagebrush and the wire was on the far side. Both his hind legs wer caught. ) So now he's home, stiched up and healing alright, but he won't eat anything but hot dogs. Refuses his usual food, won't chew on his bone from the butchers, I even tried mixing his food with raw egg and pumpkin, which he usually loves, but he won't touch it. But he'll gobble down hot dogs (which I got so I could hide his medication in them) so I know he has an appetite.
Any suggestions for something else to try? He won't eat meat unless it's ground or I would have tried chicken legs and livers. The vet said that so long as he's eating and drinking, don't worry. He didn't say anything about WHAT to feed him.
When my dogs are sick I don't give them usual food...anything they want (that's relatively healthy). I'll try scrambled eggs, raw egg with milk, cooked chicken (no bones) with broth, ground meat...be creative. If the dog is really sick I also like to give Gatorade instead of water. The point here is that I want the dog to be comfortable, rested, and happy, to aid in his recovering faster. (This also works with people.
