Today while driving home from church I spotted a dog that had been killed by a car. Noticing that it had a collar, I pulled over to see if there was a number I could call to tell the owner. When I checked the collar there were no tags. I know the majority of people on this forum make sure to keep track of their dogs, but I just wanted to reiterate that a collar without tags is like no collar at all. I feel bad for the person who is wondering where his/her dog went and probably will never learn what happened.
On a lighter note: Happy New Year, y'all!
Leah
Good reminder ! I see a lot of dogs out here running free without any kind of id at all, it always makes me sad.
I also stopped not to long ago for a dog at the side of the road with a collar but no tags, she had only been gone a little while and it was hard to just walk away.
How sad. Another lesson here is to make sure your dog is in a yard secured by a sturdy fence and to teach the dog that dashing out the door when it's opened is dangerous to him/her.
I've got blaze orange collars with thier name and phone number stenciled on them. You can read it ten feet away. A lost frightened dog may not let you get much closer. I've picked up a stray and triedd to read the tag but the lettering was almost worn out and he wouldn't hold still. took 30 minutes and a lot of wrong numbers.

Cujo saved my neighbors dogs life oen day... I was in the truck, foot on brake, shifter in reverse, I heard a jingling sound but thought it was my keys or something, almost started driving backwards when Cujo started barking out the truck window. For some reason I put the truck back in park and got outta the truck, only to find a lil white fluffy dog sitting right behind the rear driver side tire! I picked the dog up and checked the tags to make sure I knew which neighbor it belonged to, walked over to the guy n he explained someone left the garage door open n the dog ran off. I was very nice about it and didn't make a big deal about it at all.
This was the same guy that screamed at me because when my boy was 6 months old and not on a leash (my own stupidity) he ran off and went running up and down this guys front lawn playing keep-away. The guy was livid, screaming at me that my dog should be on a leash blablabla. He feels stupid now because twice now I've brought his dog back to him and not made a big deal about it.
