hi all. I have another question (don't we all!). My rescued one year GSD is well behaved, knows basic commands ( I am working on reinforcement and training everyday), is people friendly, does not bark at other dogs on walks, barks somewhat out the window, does not bark when company comes over, and whines when he needs to go out.
Now the problem. He barks when he wants attention. He will come up next to my wife or I, sit down and then bark if we do not give him attention. He only does this when the wife is home. During the day with me, if he comes over to me and I do not give him attention for sitting, then he will just lie down.
How do we get him to stop barking for attention? Or is this just a matter of teaching him the stop bark command.
Your dog has at one time or another found that barking gets him what he wants. He being demanding and should not be allowed to do this, it will continue to escalate to other annoying and rude behaviors if you do not nip this in the bud. One way of stopping it would be for you and your wife to give NO attention when he barks at you. Let him bark to his hearts content and figure it out for himself that it is no longer worth his effort. It may be really irritating for a little while but keep it up!!
And by 'ignoring' I mean that you and your wife just keep on doing whatever you were when the demands started, no eye contact or speaking to him. If this is a recent thing he has started you should see him figuring this out with in 1-3 episodes, the barking will become less intense and longer between barks.
Thanks Jamie, I figured that would be the way. You know it is so hard when the dog continues to bark. The wife breaks down and I admit it is annoying too.
