Pet owners, too, now get a break. Rabies vaccinations will no longer be required annually, but rather can follow certified immunity durations, typically three years.
The law became effective Jan. 1 to accommodate county pet licensing programs that run on the calendar year. Rabies vaccination is still required after dogs, cats and ferrets are four months old and again a year later, but thereafter the less-frequent rules apply.
Kathleen Harper, a laboratory animal veterinarian at Florida State University and secretary of the Tallahassee-based Ochlockonee River chapter of the Kennel Club of Florida, said the new rules simplify confusing timetables. She has ''more than two and less than 50'' Cardigan Welsh corgies herself.
''It's easier for everybody concerned,'' Harper said. ''It makes it easier for your average pet owner and the veterinarian. The nice thing about it is it decreases the overall vaccinations you give to any animal over its lifetime.''
And it's good for the animals, too, particularly cats. Harper said the agents in the shots other than the vaccine itself have been linked to tumors. Reducing the number of shots means less exposure to that risk.
Legislative staff members figure the changes don't mean anything to government coffers, but could save pet owners the expense of annual vaccinations that are no longer required.
It could save counties money, too. Staff estimates a $6 savings for each three-year vaccination in tags, licenses and processing costs.
