First off I know I have a lot of work ahead of me, and have ordered both of Leerburg videos on Obedience and Dominate Dogs. I am sure I will have questions once I start this training. I thought I was doing things well until reading lots of the things on this website boy was I wrong! My question is regarding my 2.5 year old Malamute/Huskey mix. Can a dog that has bitten its owner, growled at others ever really be trusted? I got him from the animal shelter and he was very sick and therefore tempermental. So until he gained the 20 pounds he needed right away I ignored some of his behavoir. For the last few months I have been training him to a good level of success. However, the last week we have had a meltdown. He growled at my wife's friend, then at my father in-law. Then finally a couple days ago it happened and when I was correcting him for growling at me, he bit me. Obviously I need to establish the pack order and I am somewhat hesitant until I get my Leerburg videos.
I rescued a 2-yr-old GSD from a shelter and she had similar problems at the beginning, and still does have some, but to a much lesser, but manageable, degree.
I have read the groundwork section and allready follow most of the rules. The main problem is I never followed rule 1 crate training. I am 100% sure before the animal shelters the dog was not crate trained. Since he is now 2.5 years old is it to late to start trying? Is it even worth the effort?
Basically I guess once my wife and I have kids we will have to never trust this dog, even if he seems perfect.
