I am by no means a dog trainer. With that being said we have a new 9 week old german shorthair, that we want more from than the pets we had as kids. Basic, well mannered obedience and some hunting work would be great. I have watched the "Your Puppy 8 Weeks to 8 Months" video and will watch the "Basic Obedience" video tomorrow. I am having a bit of a problem with biting during play time. We re-direct the pup's attention as much as possible, but especially with me, she sometimes bites a little harder or with more vigor and won't really stop until I correct her which I'm not sure is age appropriate. At what point is the biting too much and not play? Or am I just over-thinking this thing to death?
I, too, have a GSP. He was a young biter and what I did was give him a one or 2 finger chop across the nose and a firm "NO". He got the point pretty quick.
I held off on the formal in class training until he was 8 mos. I wish I'd started a lot sooner.
I found my GSP to be very hearty when it came to corrections. I tried the between-the-toes pinch when he jumped up on me with "OFF"... it was effective for a little while but after 6 mos or so (nearly 60lbs) it was rather ineffective. My trainer told me of a karate style chop across the nose... very effective. I noticed in class that he was ignoring his slip choke collar and trainer turned me on to the prong collar. Much less effort on my part and much more safe and effective for dog. I found that the weight alone told him it was work time. I rarely had to correct him at all.
I spent 24 weeks in obedience and another 4 weeks getting him to hunt effectively. He's quite nimble in the field at 75 lbs. He's 3 now.
PS. If you like your birds intact... avoid tug of war type playing. Play as much catch or fetch as he will stand. I would throw a ball and he would fetch, upon return I'd say "drop it" then throw again. Sometimes I'd give it right back so that he didn't get discouraged. Frisbee, tennis ball, kongs ouside. Super soft squeeky rubber balls inside. I'm rambling now... sorry.
