I read somewhere, I think on this board, quite some time ago now - that people like to use "cow mats" as heavy-duty pads in crates. My boy's spent about a year now in a crate with just bare plastic because he tears up anything else I put in there, if I put something in there that isn't sturdy enough to stay over the whole crate floor he just pushes it away n sleeps on the plastic.
I think my boy is old enough to be able to get a new mattress without tearing it up, but I'll be getting a puppy in the next 3 months or so, and was wondering what a Cow Mat is, and where I can find one.
If nobody knows what the heck im talking about - I'd still like to know what other people put in their crates? Or does everyone just let their dogs sleep on bare plastic?
QUOTE: I also purchase "cow mats" at our local hardware outlet. These at thick rubber mats made from old car tires. They are used in barns for the cows to lay on. When used the cows do not develop sores on their elbows and joints like they do when forced to lay on concrete floors. The mats come in 4' x 6' pads. I cut them up and put them inside my dog crates. It’s much easier for the dogs to lay on. I also put them under the crates in our home. This makes the house crate very quiet when the dogs move in them.
If you can not find cow mats locally, you can order them from a company in Kenosha, WI their phone number is 800-558-4040. They cut them to your specifications and will ship them to you UPS. END
Thanks Kristina, there's 3 dealers within 25 miles of me, I'll check in with them tomorrow if they are open weekends
The cow matts are the same as the stall matts used for horse stalls. Some of the tack shops can order them for you if you are not in a livestock active area. They usually come in 4 ft X 6 ft. size matts. They can be cut to size with a utility knife, but are not all that easy to cut. It's tuff on your hands.
Mike do you have photos of the mat you're referring to? I might take a look at those too if I know what I'm looking for
Mike, I use cow mats in all my crates and they are awesome! They're about 1/2" thick so they are heavy and if you cut them to the size of the crate (I use a utility knife) then the dog cannot get a hold of anything to chew. I found mine at a local feed supplier so check with any local feed store or find a local dairy.
