I am still green but learning fast. I have the basic obedience, drive focus and grip tapes so far. My Mal is now about 11 months old. I have been to a few training classes and my boy will hit the sleave with out a problem. I cant afford to go weekly training classes right now and I train my dog almost everyday with obedience. I dont want to over do it and not get the bite work in. I have some one that is willing to learn how to be a helper and i would get the tape on it first. My question is, is it a good idea for some one to get there own bite sleave and attempt bite work on there own? I remember all the things we did with the trainer as far as bite work.

Just a bit more info,.... He knows all the basic obedience commands and has incredable prey drive. Watching the tape Focus and grip I noticed I was already teaching him to hold onto his prey item (when he caught it). I was surprised to see I was doing some of what Bernard was teaching but I didn't know what I was doing in definition until I watched the tape.

If you don't know what you're doing you can do some serious damage, both physically and psychologically. If you want to learn to catch dogs, then you either need to take in a couple of seminars or work with an experienced decoy. Take your time and learn what YOU need to know before you attempt it on your dog.

I wouldn't do sleeve bitework with my own dog, mainly because I want him to view the helper as a fighting partner. When I first started the bitework, I attempted taking bites with him on my own. I found that he doesn't put up half the fight with me as he does another helper, as he already knows I'm stronger than him. In addition to that, a beginner dog needs to work with an experienced helper who can give him the kind of confidence he needs to progress.

I think Mike nailed it, better to go for a tug and play tug of war and let him have something to drill, if you had to chose for some one who desperately wants to work, any good trainer can fix mistakes made on a tug, the same can not always be said of a sleeve. – Just my opinion

You have have good and valid points but my problem is the $$$. No one in my area will work for free. I researched a bit into posibly joining a club but the weekly payments are still there. I would rather buy a tape for $65 and watch it over and over than spend that for one training class a week. I was thinking of learning to be a decoy myself so I can barter train with some one else in my same situation. On another note for training classes. I work till 5 monday thru friday and get my kids for the weekend (happily divocred It's hard trying to rush outta work to drive 100 miles in traffic to go to another state and train. I'm taking a day off next week to go for a bite lesson.

Hey Edgar, I live ten mins from my club. They train for free(80 a year), and guess what? I still need to drive 4 hrs(or more) and pay money to get my dogs worked the way they need to be worked. You are not alone....
Cheap or Free doesn't equate to good training.

Todd you are PRICELESS LOL Todd and Mike hit it on the head. You have to be trained first before you can train your dog, otherwise watch out-think of your kids safety too. If you can't afford to do it the right way then I wouldn't. IMO watch the tapes, on weekends take the kids up to the club and watch, you would be suprised how much the clubs are willing to help if you ask. Get advice from them, see if maybe they will evalute what you know and go from there. I don't think what your trying to do is wrong, I just think you need to find a better way to go about it.

Wow, Todd you've got it worse than me That's what I call dedication!
I'll tell you what Edgar, joining a good club is one of the best investments you'll make, much better than just the videos alone as Dee Dee mentioned. You've got people there with experience in all phases, not just the bitework alone. And if you plan on titling him, the club atmosphere is good to get him accustomed to.

First off I am not going to use myself as a decoy for my own dog. All this was a question and for a minute I felt as if you guys where flamming me for asking then I looked back and again I see all your points. I am willing to listen(read) and learn from you guys so please continue to reply with your thaughts. Now that I think about it what would you guys think if i gave the club closest to me an offer of me only paying when I bring my dog to class which will be maybe twice a month and the other two weeks I will be a helper/decoy to stay committed to the club? Of course they would have to train me. I don't fear dogs and comming from a backround of fighting, I am not scared to take a punch or bite on a sleave. I hear some dogs will leave your arm bruised. Thats cool with me.
