I find that "Swat" made by Farnam is the best ear
fly repellent. It is an ointment type and thick enough that you don't have to put it on every day.
It also doesn't take very much - just a dab on the tips and the edges where the ears seem to take the worst chewing. It used to come in bright pink but luckily now comes also in clear form so it doesn't look as bad. There are also some roll-on products made to use on the face areas of horses that work well. There is a product that Walmart sells called "Udderly Smooth that some swore worked against ear flies but I've never tried it so I can't vouch for it. You can find Swat at most feed stores or equestrian stores. Dang flies!
Handy stuff you may already have kicking around... vasaline or desitin. Both work. The latter is a B*(^h to get off though.
We have mosquitos that will carry off a 200+ lb man here. We keep a container of the OFF wipes in the shed and use them on the adults ears.. well I should say they... my dog has fuzzy ears. For some reason the flies don't bite him...

Desitin is sooo hard to get off of my kids butt, I couldn't imagine it on a dogs ears!!LOL And that particular scent.......Anyway, I swear by Swat also. It's been working for me for more than 20 years on both dogs and horses. And I kinda like the bright pink!!
No one ever said life was supposed to be easy, life is what you make of it!!
Swat definitely. It stinks to high hell, it's hot pink and very gooey....takes a good scrub to get it off your own hands BUT, it works great.
Hey Swat comes in uncoloured form now too if you want to avoid the pink ear thing. Takes a long time to use up a jar of it though as a jar will last 17 dogs a long time(that's 34 ears here!). I finally got fed up with pink and bought the clear stuff - not a big expense anyway. I use it on everything from pups up and have even pasted a blob of it on the back of my ball cap in the worst of deerfly season - not very pretty stuff but very effective!

Well then, after I use up my 2 pink can's of it...in the next 5 years, I'll go get the clear stuff!
Just to be different from every one else i will reccomend Swift, you get it from the horse shops and it smells nice (citronella type smell) and its not gooey its a liquid and it lasts up to 6 weeks. We had the worst year this summer in my memory for flys eating dogs ears. Even dogs that never get chewed on had half their ears raw over night!
Tiggy2, Can you put Swat on an ear that's already kind of chewed up or do you have to wait until it heals? My neighbours siberian's left ear is a mess and the tip of his right ear is starting to look wonky as well.
Thanks a bunch.
Yes you can put it on if the ears are chewed as it is meant to keep flies off of wounds on horses.
It will help soften the scab which usually speeds the healing/hair growing process. If you don't have Swat you can use a coating of zinc oxide or
Ihl's Paste(really thick zinc oxide - available at pharmacy) to soften the scab and physically keep the flies off but Swat repels better. I have heard Tee Tree oil works good to heal and repel flies also. Flies are getting a bit bad here too - a sure sign fall is coming(grin)
