It's 10:00 PM on Saturday and I'm doing laundry again. My GSD and I have been working on article search for SAR for the last little while and it's been a bit of a struggle. So we're both a little bored tonight. I'm doing the darks and he's tossing the socks and gloves back at me. Meanwhile I've had a beer or two and feeling a little crazy so I go hide 25% of the dirty whites in the yard (they show up nicely in the dark) and he starts bringing all back after they've been hiden awhile. Sure some have a little holes but we sure did have a good time.

Seriously, good for you. If you have a household chore to do, why not make it interesting for all concerned? A dull session with laundry just got a bit less boring, and your dog gets a little bit of impromptu training. Everyone wins.

That's all fine and good if you're just playing with the dog, but you may be creating bad habits for actual real-life article searches/evidence recovery (retrieving instead of just indicating).
Just be careful with the context, from the dogs point of view.
Another Search and rescue training that might prove handy
My son has an increased interest in girls. Naturaly at his age, i might add but with a nasty side effect; He disappears without a trace and without his cellphone. So if i needed him i had to result to the "door-to-door search". Basicaly i'm a lazy person, so i found a more effective methode. I learned my dog to search him. Last week i put on the long leach and gave the order. Off we went 2 miles furhter befor an unknown house he stopped. I rang and, YESSSSS my son was there. Best thing i learned my dog untill now
In my area to be certified they may retrieve the articles (RCMP Canada) . Better I'm told in SAR operation for the article to be found in the general area than not found at all. Of course criminal case this would different.
I'm training to Level 1 RCMP . Ulrich does tracking through drive but he also does searching for articles and subjects. I'm told in a lot of cases unless you stumble upon the track the person took the searching is needed to find a person. Also depends on conditions and age of track that your dogs is working upon. If you're grid searching you may come upon either part of a track, an article or a scent cone. All skills are valuable. Once part of an usable track is found it can be finished with tracking through drive or continued searching.
