Hello
I need the Guru's of K9's advise My 16 month old K9 Argo,GSD,male in training for servise work is losing weight! I have seen him eat all his food 28%Pet Pro, chicken base,6 large cups a day.He is active and he runs all over with my other GSD, I have them in the kennel and out for long walks through out the day, plus his training. I can see his ribs a little and he looks lanky. I have had him tested for worms it came back negitive. He's healthy as a horse the vet said! no thyroid problems all blood work came back in normal range.
Argo does have a high energy level!!
Any advise on changing food or a supplement?
Thanks Everyone
Lewis/Argo

Lewis,
Sounds like a "growing period" for your dog. If you are only feeding once a day; I would divide the food (perhaps add some to the ration) and increase the feedings to twice per day. You want to watch that the dog doesn't gain a lot of weight which would be unhealthy.
Yeah Lewis,
I think Barb is probley right, my 10 month old looks to be losing weight as well, I just added a second chicken carcass at breakfast, it's only been three days so I will have to wait and see if he starts to re-gain, but I thought as well as Barb that it is a growing phase....
If the vet said all is ok... I would go with it...

Hey Folks,
Argo was 96lbs at a year old, then he started to thin out he's about 80lbs now so it would be over a 4 month period. As far a feeding he's fed twice a day 7am and 9pm a pretty strict schedule do to training times and exercise times. The heat has been on the high 80's to 90's. Plus I wondered if it was a growth thing?

LonnyB,
Yea it most be a growth thing! I keep Argo slim. I remember the old timers in Germany telling me my Giant Schnauzer was fat! I though she looked GREAT! They were jealous because she blew their GSD away in the Sch3 trials LOL
I also had a GSD LOL.

My pup is 76 pnds give or take and looks like a skin on paws with a huge head, in fact I have a really funny story about this.... I work at a scuba shop sometimes when people can't come in.. whatever.. my good friend Doug has a Rott mix and he is very fat so he is always trying to justify to me why his dog is fat bla bla bla, anyway myself and my dog were just kickin it the other day and this guy came in and said my dog looked skinny, and to my suprise, Doug said and I quote " I guess you never seen a really in shape dog eh?" God I about fell over laughing, this coming from a guy who beileves in free feeding.
I duno if you thought this was funny but I guess you gota know Doug and his dog to really find it funny.
