HI All,
I've been looking at buying Building Drive and Focus with FLINKS DVD but I was sure there was another (or maybe just a different name for the same DVD) called Building Drive Focus and Grip.
Can anyone clarify for me and is this a good video to get for my 7 month old GSD?
I'd like to have the option of training for protection work and also I'm very keen on having the best trained dog on the block
I already have Basic Dog OB and it's very good (Thanks Ed).
Only problem with these videos is that they are expensive...plus I get charged by those ratbags at customs for whatever reason.
Ed if the videos were a bit cheaper I'd but a lot more. Also making them available to purchase and Download would be very nice
Cheers
John

John,
For me, the vids are not cheap either, after postaged and currency changes close to 100 bucks in Can dollars. But to answer your question..yes! This is a great video. The content of the video is great. The theory of what Bernhard Flinks is teaching in it and the footage is great too because you can study the proper technique for teaching these methods. We all want the best dog on the block, that's why we train and come here to this site That said if you are considering this video I would recommend it to anyone.

Cheers Bradley,
You might have a fight on your hands for that title when I eventually move to Canada

Hi John, i look at it a different way, to pay for private lessons and get all the information you get from the leerburg videos would be much, much more expensive than just buying the video, plus, you can watch it over and over and see all the mistakes you made earlier in the day , i don't think you'll find a much better deal around, you'll find cheaper, but nothing with the amount of information contained in the leerburg videos,

Building Drive & Focus is a good DVD for any dog owner that has any signs of having drive. When you find someone to work with, the DVD's I got are First Steps to Bite Training and First Steps to Defense... I hear Preparing your dog for the helper is also a good video, I think it teaches a new helper basic decoy work too, don't quote me on that since that's the video I didn't buy. I want to get the Protection Training Dogs video, and I confirmed that alot of what I did when raising Cujo was the right thing to do when I watched "Raising a working puppy", and it also gave me some good information that I can continue doing with Cujo and start doing from day 1 with my next pup.
When Cujo was a puppy I didn't know if I would ever protection train my dog due to lack of helper, but I did the foundation work with him anyway, and did what I could on my own. When I got with the helper I was a little disappointed in my dog, some days would be great, some days would be less so, heck the first time I got with the helper my dog didn't react to me getting beat up on (at least he alerted to the helper when he was sneaking around the truck), and just sniffed at the sleeve when it was presented to him... last night was a better training session than I could have ever hoped for, my helper managed to bring my dog out in defense instead of prey, and unlike the first time we tried to get my dog to bite in defense (where he wasn't confident, hesitated to bite, didn't bite well, had to have me run at the helper with him etc), he did not hesitate for even a second, he wasn't pulling on the end of the line when he was barking, but when I told him to take down the helper, he ran at the sleeve, targeted, bit harder than I've ever seen him bite, and he was fighting for his life, growling and doing better than I've ever seen from him before, it was an awesome experience, especially considering I never expected it from him, and wasn't even sure if I was able to do bitework with him at all 6 months ago. Last night was his first GOOD SERIOUS bite and it's a proud moment
Basically my point is, even if you're not sure wether you are able to protection train the dog, doing the foundation work with your dog now is an excellent idea, when you find someone willing to take bites from your dog you will appreciate the work you're doing now.

John,
Look at it this way -
I've attended seven Flinks seminars now, and I've driven across our rather large country to attend them. But they helped me develop a new method of training and handling and they were worth every dime that I spent - and my dog was the one that ultimately benefited the most!
Now look at the expenses of you attending a single Flink's seminar, and then trying to tape it ( if you're working a dog, you'll need to include the cost of a second person to run the camera, no doubt ).
Now take the time to edit those tapes down into a focused working tape, and count the time and cost it put you back - and Ed's DVD's will look like a bargain, I assure you.
I own the entire Flink's series of DVD's and they've been the ones that I find myself going back to for a review of a training concept over and over again.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the replies.
When I thought about it, I realised just how much time i spend on this board and how much help and advice I get. In addition I read a lot of Ed's articles which are also very good and I wouldn't be anywhere without the site as a whole.
I'd just be another dumb ass owner with a dog with lots of potential but no chance to fulfill it if the wife hadn't stumbled upon this site when our pup was sick.
I'll buy the video and I'll not complain about price any more (unless it goes up ).
Cheers
John

John,
I really don't think you will be disappointed! I have 4 of Ed's DVD's and I'm at the mail box everyday waiting for the other 4 that I ordered a few weeks ago The one that you were asking about is the one I watch the most, and the one that has taken my dog and I the farthest in the shortest amount of time. It is also material that can be applied to everyday life with your dog (but a little tricky sometimes
One of the new titles I am waiting on is the second video in Ed's "Flinks series". If you were at all interested in that one as well, wait a few more days and I will PM you and tell how great it is (although I am sure now of what I will say because then you could save yourslef a little postage!

John,
As the owner of a companion GSD, who I do not intend to train for PPD, I just wanted to say that the Drive and Focus DVD has taught me how to interact with my dog in a way that he absolutly loves. I do not have the time to devote to training the way many members of this board do, but the nature of the beast cannot be denied. He is a far happier dog because of this DVD. Mike and Will's comments on the value (time saved with trainers, etc) are also very relevant.
I also completely agree that the price reflects the quality of the video, and in general, I consider it very important to support Ed and Leerburg as a whole enterprise. I try and spend my money to support businesses and individuals that I respect. The total value of this transaction extends far beyond what you will receive in the video.
