hello everyone,
i am at my witts end with my boxer. he is 2yoa. he has been peeing in the house at night almost every night. he knows its wrong cause he hides from us when he hears us come out of the room. he eats at 8 am and at 6 pm. he goes out at the same times, last time at 11 pm, first time at 530 am. he knows where he is suppose to pee. he is crate trained, i have tried keeping him in the crate only coming out on his scheduled going out times and eating times for weeks at aa time and the first night he stays out he pees. and its only at night. i can leave him loose all day and he wont pee. i have tried keeping the light on at night and that didnt work. and he doesnt pee in the same places either. i even tried leaving him in the cage for longer periods without going out trying to get him used to holding it longer and that didnt help either. he can hold it in for 10 hours during the day without even whining, but at night he just pees after like 2 or 3 hours. oh yea, he doesnt drink water after 6pm.
someone please help me cause i am fed up with this crap. i love this dog but he id distroying my home. i want him for protection so crating him over night defeats the purpose of having him. please help
thanks again

Manny,
Have you consulted your vet yet? There may be medical issue that requires attention.

Manny, keep him in the crate thru the night until he's reliable, that's how you do it. And btw, he doesn't know it's wrong, he knows your pissed off, i don't think spite is a trait canines carry. One thing i've learned, human frustration has zero benefit with dog training, start over and good luck,

Yeah, dogs aren't spiteful. Cats maybe.
Have you tried getting him to run around in the yard for an hour before you sleep? It's also a good idea to start training him obedience so he recognizes a 'marker' signal ("Sit, Good boy!"), and then when you ask him to pee and he pees outside, mark him and praise him. Don't even bother making a big deal when he pees inside and it's been more than 5 seconds already.
Crate train him first. And then when he knows what's expected of him ask him to protect your house...

I have the same issue with Caleb-he never pees in the house, but *only* because I get up and let him out whenever he scratches at my door. I've tried all the tricks too, but he just loves water. He opens the toilet lid if I forget to close the bathroom door, or he gets the cats' water off the counters. He'll find water any way he can, but he alerts me when he's got to pee. Your dog may not be as bold. Does he let you know he has to pee during the day? This boxer may not be being spiteful; what looks like guilt is actually fear. Could it be that he just doesn't know how to tell you that he needs to go out? Or could you be sleeping through his attempts? If you don't have problems during the day, this could be the case. Try not giving him water after a certain time at night and see if you can get him on a different schedule. I'd love to be able to do that!

I agree with others that he is not being spiteful, and that confused fear is more likely to be causing the hiding.
Al Curbow is 100% right on, IMO, with the crate-training. I would start with crate-training just as if he was a new puppy, and I would try very hard not to let frustration into your interactions. It's counter-productive.
I believe that if it isn't a physical problem, then it's a training (handler) problem. Just MHO.

Yikes! That reads like a personal attack! I didn't mean to sound like that. The up side of behavior issues that are related to training (handler) error is that they can also be fixable by the handler!

Hi Manny:
I believe as well, that you need to crate this boy until he can be trusted loose at all times. An alternative, can be to tether him to your bed, and see if he asks to go out during the times he would be likely to pee, and then ask if he has to go out when you take him out. He will learn to ask you to go out. Sometimes more active dogs just have to pee more. My youngest dog, has to go more, just simply because she is UP WAY more than the others. Another thing, where does he sleep?
