Well for the past month or so I've been using two supplements for dry skin irritation. It seems to be working really well. The GSD hardly ever bites or scratches himself. On a scale of 1 to 10 it was around a 8 before using the supplements.
1000mg Omega 3 Fish Oil capsule 1 time daily
1000mg Flaxseed Oil capsule 1 time daily
At present on a scale of 1 to 10 it's around 2. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
The imediate results look great, however I don't know what, if any long term use may cause.
I plan to continue both supplements for 90 days total. Then discontinue usage until I see a increase in scratching and biting of himself.
Then start using supplements again for relief of this problem.
Beware this may be over dosing, so I'm using caution as all should if they try this method.

"Beware, this may be overdosing"
Your are obviously aware of vitamin A, I think in this case, overdosing. I wonder if any of the vet tecks or anyone else would know the limits for dogs tolerance to this? Do you feed raw, and if not, I wonder if that would take care of the problem?
Why don't you try canned sardines once a week. Canned salmon is also good. 1 T. (tablespoon) of a good olive oil per day is ok too.
If your dog is a house dog try using a humidifyer if your house is too dry as well.
Just a couple of suggestions. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Is the dryness local or generally all over? Small spots could be rubbed with warm oil (messy).
I don't know if any of the dog shampoos for dry skin are any good.
Vancamp, I may go to raw diet if I stay unemployed. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> Only reason feeding kibble is for convience. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />
Thanks for the suggestions, <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
If you feed the raw diet the dog will get more of the (unspoiled) essential lipids that you are supplimenting for with the oils.
I don't much like the idea of veggie oil, because you can use animal products instead. Just heard that from someone. . . I also don't know how the dogs digest the veggie oils.
