Guest1 Webboard User Reg: 07-17-2002 Posts: 860 Loc: Iowa Offline	Does anyone (should one?) generally take a progressive, systematic approach to physical conditioning for their dogs? That is, increasing intensity and/or duration of physical endeavors such as steep hill running. Or does one want maintain a buffer zone between true exhaustion? I'm thinking in terms of implications on the joints. Jogging and the like isn't even good for US, but then again, we have a wider variety of exercise venues. Or, does it suffice to simply play with the dog and quit when he's showing that he's getting tuckered out? Adult dogs, now.

Keep an eye on the dog, and stop when s/he shows signs of fatigue. When I had to rehab my dog from his surgery, the surgeon had me increase duration, rather than intensity. Only after the duration had reached a certain point, with no limping or signs of pain or discomfort, was I allowed to increase the intensity. Here's a link to an article about canine conditioning. This person knows more about the mechanics of exercise than many certified personal trainers I know...literally. (I also happen to have one of those worthless pieces of paper). I have a hankerking to find out more...especially regarding the pros and cons of upping the intensity and dropping the duration. For humans, it's great...and I'd venture to say it's the same with dogs. But I'm not quite ready to jump the gun, knowing what little I do about aggravating (or creating) hip problems.

In police working dogs, conditioning is essential. Usually there is not warm-up period, and a dog goes from dead stop to full speed, exerting an enourmous amount of energy. The last thing the handler can worry about, at that particular time, is the dog coming up lame. We shouldn't condtion in an effort to purly build muscle, but train with a sense of increasing stamina. When a track starts, it could be 500 yards, it could be several miles. Train like you expect to work. DFrost Any behavior that is reinforced is more likely to occur again.

Also, muscles harden within a matter of week but tendons and bone take months to strengthen fully. Just something to add to everybody elses good sugestions.
