My Bouvier broke a tooth last night while fighting with a raccoon. She is up to date with shots. The vet wants to pull the tooth if the root is exposed. This seems severe. Any recommendations? The tooth involved is the lower right canine tooth.
Your vet may not have the ability to fill or cap the tooth. My oldest Border terrier had both upper canines broken fighting with coons. they were broken at the gum line and one of my hunting partners, a DVM, said the broken upper canines could cause serious, hard to get rid of infections because of their close proximity to the sinus casvities. I don't know of reason to pull lowers canine. Talk to your vet about this.
Don't sweat it, now you have an excuse for getting titanium implants. I've seen a couple of dogs with them, they look like the terminator.

Join the club My dog broke the same tooth. I had a dog dentist do a root canal on him. We both decided not to cap it at that time and he's gone on to a SchH III and hasn't had any more problems with it (knock on wood) If we need to we can cap it later but at this point in time he's doing just fine. This happened almost three years ago. It's a little discolored because of doing the root canal (a little yellow) but as long as it works I'll leave it alone.
I too have seen a psd with 4 steel canines - looked pretty intimidating. Sort of like Jaws from those James Bond movies. Spoke with the handler, he said the dog didn't mind and they didn't affect his ability to work. So, other than the expense, I wouldn't sweat it too much.
