HI, first time writer
I'm looking for any suggestes in how to stop a 1yr old male cocker spaniel. I have use a product call forbid a powder form and as well changed his diet. But you can only use the porduct for so long and once I stop using it the dog goes right back eating its own feces. I feed him three times a day, So I know his not going hungry. Any suggestes
You may be feeding the dog too much. Three times a day is alot IMHO. The feces may not be completely digested and the dog is smelling the undigested food. A raw food diet would probably fix the problem. What are you feeding the dog at this time? I have read about putting hot sauce on the stools and meat tenderizer on the food, but to me this seams to be treating the symptom, not the problem.
I suggest you try one tablespoon of crushed pineapple in the diet daily. Apparently some dogs can miss an enzyme that pineapple provides.
Make sure you're not feeding anything sweet, such as honey or sugar in the diet. There is an additive here called "Thrive D" that seems to stop it too. I don't know if it's available where you are.
Digestive enzyme supplements are also an option and can be given for as long as you need to. Auster gets ones from the health food store that are made for humans. They help the dog better utilize the food the first time around. FYI, meat tenderizer has an enzyme in it, so it's really just giving one enzyme instead of many. I think Forbid might be an enzyme as well.

My GSD used to do this when he was a puppy.
IMHO the only cure is not to give the dog a chance to eat crap - in other words supervise the dog when he eliminates and clear up immediately.
If it's not there the dog can't eat it
I agree with Gwen. One of my dogs has always done this and she is now 9. I've tried everything, and the only thing for sure is to constantly keep the yard cleaned up.
I'm with Gwen too. It has never been proven why dogs do this. The enzyme thing is just a theory. There are other theories, such as that it's an attention getting behavior, or they're trying to "get rid of the evidence" if they've been punished for going in the wrong place, or they just like eating crap.
At any rate, removing the opportunity is the best course of action. Supervise the dog when he "goes", and dispose of waste promptly.
I read a funny story on this topic a while back.
Apparently there was this doberman with this problem - he became an expert crap eater and could actually spin around and catch his own crap before it hit the ground Hee hee
