A recomendation would be based on what you want the collar for. Containment or training, for example. There are many E-collar models out there, I for example have one not offered on the Leerburg web site and I am happy with it for my needs. As I'm not 100% sure on the etiquette here for endorsing an "outside" product, I won't mention the brand but the one's offered on Leerburg ARE of very high quality. Also, a feature included with one of the training models offered by Leerburg is a "nick" button. The model that I own does not have this feature, but let me put it to you this way, I wish that it did <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />
I was planning on a Dogtra 1202NPC (2 dog model of the 1200NCP) but Tritronics is also an awesome brand so I'm not sure... supposedly Dogtra is discontinuing the 1200 and the 2000 series and replacing it with something new, I'm in no hurry to replace my Innotek ADV300 (even tho the range is nowhere near 300 yards!! I found this out when doing long distance obedience the other day on a big field, useless!!) so I'll wait till I know when the new Dogtra's coming out. I like the vibration option on the dogtra's - it should be enough to snap my dog out of minor distractions without having to shock him all the time... I like to use the minimum correction neccesary, sometimes its maximum level on the Innotek sometimes its level 1 which I can't even feel on my fingertips.
I have a Dogtra 1202 NCP and am VERY happy with it. I like the big buttons since I live in Northern Michigan and have gloves on most of the time. I use the warn and nick buttons but have never used the continious button ever. The only thing I don't like is that the belt clip is kind of chincy, it broke the first time I used it. The intensity dial can get bumped up or down accidentally. If I have it in my pocket I will tape it in place if I am going to be really active and know I may need to get it out quickly. For normal use it's not an issue but if I am going to somthing that I will likely have to use it and don't want the dog to see the controler in my hand it's a good idea. I have a dominant, coller wise, male GSD that is a bit hard to control when he is in full drive and even he responds nicely to a nick.
Dogtra 1200 NC and LOVE it for reliability! Definitely the BEST ecollar that I have owned. And I've had Innotek and TT...no comparison for the price...Will definitely stick with them!
For the people who use the Dogtra 1200, what features of this collar make you prefer it over the Dogtra 200? I own an Innotek 1002, but have used the Dogtra 200 recently and have been very impressed with it and I'm tempted to switch to this system. When I tried the Dogtra 1200, I thought the collar seemed quite a bit bulkier, so I was curious as to why so many people seem to choose this model.
I mainly work my dogs outside and rarely at a range of more than 200 meters or so. I guess that would be a factor for some people.
Well, I use a Dogtra 1200 and the main reason is that it delivers enough juice to give a worthwhile correction for the incredibly hard dog that I have - and believe me, I went through *a lot* of collars before I found one that would work when he's in his protection drive .
Softer dogs can do just fine with a product that delivers a lower correction, you just need to know your dog and what he needs.
I also have a Dogtra 200NCP gold ( two of them, actually ) and I use them extensively for obedience.....and they work great. But when it's protection time, I switch to the 1200 and it works like a charm.
I would look at the Tri-Tronics. I own a dogtra 202NPC system and it is of very good quality, but the TT systems have a smart charger system, with the dogtra I have there is a 14 hour charge time from empty. A smart charger that you could top off the bateries every night would be a great feature.
