My puppy (9.5 months old) threw up for no apparent reason last night at around 4:30 am. I switched her diet recently to Honest Kitchen (about 6 weeks ago), and last night added a small amount of canned salmon and ground turkey. My girlfriend is a little suspicious of the diet and thinks it might be food poisoning. FWIW, all she threw up was stomach fluids, and she seems like her normal, energetic self this morning. She ate her usual breakfast without issue. Is there any reason to worry?
I wouldn't be unless it repeats. Maybe the canned tuna caused irritation.
If it continues i would seek a vet.
I usually add only one thing to this diet and see how the dog reacts to it. Try to add turkey one time and tuna second time.
That will allowe you to see which one is maybe irritating your dog's stomach. I usualy go with chicken and insted of adding tuna I add Grtizly oil.. I thing that is the name.
I have never fed my dogs with canned tuna.
BTW my dog throws up ocasionaly. But I have to mention it is because he forgets to chew his meat. I still have to cut ist in to smal peases.
I would not worry till it happens on daily bases.
My dog musta thrown up 15 times in the last year and a half, dogs throw up for weird reasons, the first time he ate the honest kitchen he puked up a lil green pile of goop, new foods can cause it, eating poop can cause it, chewing and eating a plastic frisbee can cause it, or my personal favorite that really had me worried... eating a tube of chicken flavored doggy toothpaste INCLUDING THE ALUMINUM TUBE can cause a doggy to puke My friends great dane has a somewhat sensitive stomach that causes her to puke and be gassy with certain foods, but if you're feeding the no-grain formulas from THK I don't see why this should be an ongoing problem.
Thanks for the replies! Come to think of it, that was the first time I added several 'extras' together like that. She's never had a problem with either salmon or turkey or whatever before. Maybe it was a little rich for her. Oh, she did find a ball point pen on my counter and chewed that up yesterday...
Probably due to the sudden diet change. I would gradually change the food. Probably use a 50/50 mix of new food to old food. Then increase gradually until you have switched over completely.
