I was doing some searching but didn't see a clear opinion on fence choices. I'm getting a pup and am in the country. I was thinking about a 5 foot or taller chain link.
#1 Is that tall enough?
#2 Chail link is one of the more unappealing fences. Although you can see through it, which is important. Anyone dress up a fence?
what type of dog? if it is going to be a large dog that is athletic like a german shepherd. boxer , or pit, i would opt for a 6ft tall fence. i have a thread called "where to buy this type kennel" myself and others are searchig for vertical bar style kennel runs. to me they look much better than chain link.
my only problem with chain link - other than the lack of privacy and the overall appearance - is that a determined climber might be able to get their feet in it and climb up like a ladder if they tried hard enough.
No Chris, your opinion is a fact! My dog climbs the 7' chainlink fence every time he gets bored. Then, comes to my front door and bangs to be let in. He has also hurt his feet doing this because he's gotten them caught as he's jumping over, and therefore pulling muscles. My dream is an 8' wooden fence-I have a 6'along the back and he's dangerously close to jumping it.

The size of the fence really doesn't matter if the dog can climb! My 11 year old shepherd used to escape from a yard with a six foot wooden fence with an electric wire on top of that,he would just go up and over the fence electric shock and all!It has more to do with how determined your dog is at getting out than what is keeping him in.
One of my neighbors installed a privacy fence BACKWARDS, so the support beams running across it are on the outside. Ugly for the rest of us, but his dog can't get any footing to climb.
