What Robert is getting at (in his own nice little way is that 'civil' is not a 'drive'... it is more a behavior/personality trait.
To answer your question, IMO, it ALL depends on the person.. and on the dog.
What could you gain from it? Umm.. either a great, challenging, learning experience, with a very nice product at the end of training.. or, you could gain many an injury and mental trauma enough to make you stay away from dogs for the rest of your life
It appears that you're looking for a trainer/ club in another thread. If you do not have a *strong* relationship with a skilled trainer yet, I wouldn't even dream about getting a dog like you described.
Starting off with a dog like this will require you to either be a skilled handler or have the ability to train with one - and you'd be best off to have some one rapidly available to ask the many questions that will come up training a dog like that.
Just my opinion, but I'd err on the side of safety if I were you.
I'm nowhere near ready for the dog yet. I am looking toward the future. I'm getting ready to move to the country and I need to find a trainer there. If there is any that is...
So would you say the best way to gain experience for this type of dog is to work with a trainer? What are some things to expect with a GSD of that temperament? Are they handler aggressive? I have experience with semi sharp and sharp but with the types of dogs I have handler aggression doesn't seem to be an issue for the most part.
Thank you Sammy for correcting my wording. I'm not fluent in dog yet
My question really is, what types of things does one do to prepare for a dog like that? Working with a trainer with a different breed, would that be helpful? I'm trying to prepare for when the time comes and I'm ready.
My brother just got a GSD. He won't tell me the lines but he insists it's a working line. It's a nice dog, but it's not of the quality of GSD's I remember when I was a teenager and younger. When I do get one, and it could be in a few years or it could be in 10, I want it to be a good one. While I have time I'd like to do whatever I need to to be ready. Hope this makes sense.
Let me ask you this... why do you want a civil dog?
Because anything less is just a show dog isn't it? If a dog isn't sharp it's not going to be naturally protective with a natural aptitude for protection. In which case IMO, it's not a real guardian breed or a real GSD.
Thank you for the input. I need to work with a trainer for a few years before I consider this again so for now I'll stick with what I know for now

Nope.

Incorrect.
Sorry to be blunt, but my brain power nor stress levels are not up to this today LOL... You have a LOT of learning to do before you even utter the word GSD, never mind the word civil or protection... and don't be offended by that, we are ALL still learning every day of the week.
Will.. care to take this one??? Yer the man!
