Hello everyone. I have a Husky Border Collie cross almost 2 years old. Well my guy has had a little bout of diarrhea for about a day now. I haven't changed his food or anything of that nature. Now about 2 weeks ago i bought him a Nyla Bone. It's suppose to be the one that is for super powerful chewers (which Tucker is)he should've only been able to chew off small fragments of the bone. Well i took a good look at it the other day, and the one end of the bone is totally gone. I found a few big chunks of the bone around on the carpet, but not nearly enough to make up for the end of the bone, so i am going to assume he injested the other fragments. He is fine in every aspect, eating well (although i did give him just boiled rice & chicken when i saw he had diarrhea)drinking fine, activity level same, his gums and eyes are pink, not washed out, and i am not sure if it's really an indication of his health, but his nose is wet and cold. Could the fragments of this bone be causing the problem? There is no blood in the diarrhea, its mostly the "pudding" kind i've seen described but sometimes there's a couple of little drops of watery mucous.
I have started him on Maalox yesterday, he's only getting Rice & boiled chicken. I did give him a day of not eating.
Any thoughts???

i can't answer your question about the nylabone. but i suggest you fast your dog a day to give his system a rest. then give him boiled rice only. then gradually add the boiled chicken into the boiled rice. do not include fat or skin, skim off the fat.
also some canned pumpkin can help him get back to normal stools. works both for loose stools and constipation. you want plain pumpkin puree, NOT pumpkin pie mix.

Thanks, i saw someone mention about the pumpkin pie mix (i'll assume you mean pure nothing added pumpkin pie mix)
Not sure if he'll go for it though. I did actually give him a day of fasting (maybe not a full day now that i think about it) before going on the boiled rice & chicken.
Now since i don't want to give him his normal food yet until his system is back in order, should i try mixing the pumpkin in with the rice???
I was curious about the nyla bone because it says that it should pass harmlessly through the dogs system, but i am concerned because I know he's chewed off more than just little shavings here and there.

send nylabone the bone so they can see that a chunk came off, and ask for your money back. or take it back to where you bought it. those bones are not cheap!
yes, you can put canned pumpkin (again NOT pumkin pie mix) in with the rice. my dog is the fussiest eater on earth and he eats canned pumpkin. mix in some plain, non-fat unsweetened yogurt, too. a whole raw egg is good, too, in a couple of days, once he's back on track. then some cottage cheese is also good. you will then transition him from this bland diet back onto his regular food.

I have not yet met a dog who won't eat the plain pumpkin puree. I keep it on hand always........almost like always keeping aspirin and bandaids! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Yes, I am going to take the bone back to where i bought it. It didn't even last 2 weeks.
Ok, so i will do what you suggested with the pumpkin,(pure pumpkin pie in the can) i'll assume that i should stop giving him the Maalox when i start with the pumpkin. Would it be counter-productive to still give it to him? Or should i still give him the Maalox for another day?

If it says the word "pie" on the label, it's not the right can. I looked at the two different cans I have; both say "Pumpkin" and that's it. Ingredients: Pumpkin, water for processing on one and Pumpkin on the other. No sugar and no spices.
IMO, just from my own experience, run-of-the-mill diarrhea responds very well to a couple of spoons of the plain pumpkin. I haven't had to use Maalox with it. Again, JMO, I'd call the vet if the stools didn't firm up after a day or so of pumpkin, or of course if any blood appeared, or straining unproductively to eliminate.

....i don't know why this is,but Nylabones are different than then used to be years ago. i remember back in the 1960s they used to frizzle on the chewed ends, almost like strands, but now they chip and break instead. they do have those really hard ones, the Galieos, but i haven't had any experience with those. our dogs do have nylabones, but we make sure they are the biggest ones, which slows down the chipping process,it seems...*fingers crossed*

This Nyla-Bone one was suppose to be one of the top ones...supposedly the toughest one for big time chewers, and it was the largest one they had in the store. So either Tucker's a really really tough chewer, or maybe there was a defect with this one, because it literally only took him 2 weeks to break the end down. I of course took it away. Ok, so i am off to by some pumpkin (no spices or sugar...got itt!) and hopefully he'll sort himself out. There's no blood, just diarrhea and some mucous, which is clear.
