Hi-Just wondering if anyone has any experience with surgery for a torn ACL. I took Caleb to the vet today because he was limping, and they said I need to take him to an orthopedic surgeon ASAP. It seems like there's quite a bit of debate as to whether the surgery is worth it in the long run. Any thoughts or experiences? I'd like to get him evaluated asap, so does anyone have any recommendations within driving distance (a couple hours is ok) of Chicago? Thanks.
I think I know of someone who tops in this area...I believe it's all he does. Now I have just have to remember which friend told me about him.
Hi, I have an Am. Staff who pulled her ACL. The vets here wanted to do surgery immediately, it wasn't torn however, so I opted against it. With lots of rest and some anti-inflammatories she is now 100%. Good luck with Caleb, research the orthopedic vet thoroughly before you decide. I haev seen a few dogs that had surgery come out of it completely and are back to working. Good luck
Thanks for the replies. I am very conservative about meds and surgeries, and have come across some scary things about the surgery. However, he's only just turned 2, and I'd hate to not do something that will increase his chances of less pain later on. I did make an appointment with a specialist for tonight, and I'll get more info before I decide what to do. Courtney-how long has your dog been ok? There's a lack of data following dogs longterm to show whether surgery or no surgery is the best option.
Thanks for the link, Will. I missed that one somehow. Which surgery did your rottie have?
Hank-please let me know if you can think of the guy's name!
Thanks, everyone!
jenni,
My Rottie bich had an open repair/ fixation after she clipped the meter jump in SchH training ( she was seven years old at the time ). She wore a cast for four weeks if I remember correctly and we did a little rehab afterwards. I retired her from SchH ( only got her SchH II, darn it! ) but I continued to do AKC ob with her until she was 13 years old ( she lived to be 15, I was so lucky to get to spend that much time with her ).
In my view she made a great recovery and the surgery was only around $200.
Thank you kindly, gentlemen. I take it, Will, that yours underwent the traditional surgery. You're one of the few who aren't saying the dog needed the other one done later, and who actually had 8 good years. People are only reporting several months later, not years. I'm glad to hear a longer-term prognosis/success story.
