I heard a couple of times from different people that if you give a dog chocolate you will kill them. Now i dont feed my dog chocolate i never would but i want to find out from the people that know if this is true so the next time its mentioned i can tell them if its true or not.
Another thing that was mentioned was if your walking a dog namely a bitch and she catches a sent she will run away after it but a dog wont. It was mentioned when i had my 3 month old off the leash for a few minutes everyday. Is there any truth that a female will run quicker then a male. Is this complete crap or what. I dont see how it can be but again i come to those who know.
Thanks
Gav xxx

Gavin, yes, chocolate is toxic. Dark is worse than milk, but they are both toxic. White chocolate is not. However, the quantity varies from dog to dog. My friend's GSD ate a pan of dark chocolate brownies and nearly died; my chi ate 17 of those individually wrapped Reese's peanut butter cups and didn't even get sick, and he's only six pounds. However, they are more peanut butter than chocolate, and so I definitely think we lucked out there. As for the other half of your question...total BS. Never heard that one, and if it were true, I'd think it would be the other way around, with the male running after a scent.

My pup got hold of my German chocolate last week. Did not kill him, made him a bit more hiper due to the amount of sugar. It almost killed me to find out that MY chocolate was eaten by dog "My mother sent it from Germany"<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />.
My little brother would share his sweats with my dog all the time including chocolade (Dog is 12 years old now). Nothing ever happen. I have no Idea what you mean by the running faster thing. Just dont understand.

Well forgot not to mention that the stuff I eat is more sugar than chocolade, But I also never had dog eaten huge amounts.
That is why they survived my brothers treats.

Thank you i taught so about the male doing the running after the scent. Im blessed to have a job where my pup can come in with me i spend everyday with her. I know her pretty well. And i feel that its with most bitches she wont stray to far where with the male dog they may be more adventurous.

I just mean that a female dog would chase a scent before a male dog would.

Gavin I got it, after a while, just you dont formulate things like I do, it has nothing to do with you, It is because english is my third language and sometimes it gets all messed up.
I would say that male would run before female.

This is correct. There's no question about it. And, per my vet, the time of year when the most chocolate-related tragedies happen is December, when there are wrapped boxes of chocolates under the tree. We may not smell them, but our dogs sure can!

Just Google DOGS, CHOCOLATE for hundreds of sites confirming this.

Yes,as you've read chocolate is toxic to dogs. Every holiday like halloween and valentines day at the vet hospital the notorious "chocolate dogs" would come in for treatment. The dogs would go thru treatment to make them vomit, fluids and the heart rate had to be taken sometime every half hour. It is not the sugar in the chocolate that makes them hyper its a chemical called theobromine that acts much like us on speed or too much coffee. It can cause cardiovascular issues, tremors as well as dehydration due to it's diuretic effects.

When I was a kid we had a family dog (a cockapoo) that ate an entire box of turtles. SHe was 30 lbs or so - nothing happened to her.
I know that it is toxic for dogs as mentioned above, but I have heard of so many instances of dogs eating chocolate without a problem that it sounds like something you should be conscious of (like leaving a box unattended) but that if your dog happens eat some chocolate in most cases the dog will be fine.
PS - Im not a vet nor an expert!! Just in case Will was listening!
