I've been reading the various other posts on the subject, but because of my situation i.e where I live, it's virtually impossible for me to get to a vet's for some good advice.
Anyway, my Rottie's always shaking his head like there's something in his ears. Are they just dirty or are there some kind of mites lurking around? I had a good look today and everything looks fine so I'm a little confused as to what I should do next.
In addition, in this country it's almost impossible to buy a syringe because of the MASSIVE intra'v drug problem. If I can't get hold of one and his ears do indeed need cleaning, what can I do?

Bingo! You've hit the nail on the head Richard. I'll check again for dirt with a cotton bud tomorrow. If that fails to turn up the goods, what's the next step?
Get access to a Vet or microscope. A swab smeared on a slide and look for mites or yeast rather than just dirt. You may be able to send a swab to a Vet if you can't go to the office.
If you can't be a Good Example, then You'll just have to Serve as a Horrible Warning. Catherine Aird.
Andy,
I have a Lab. That has constant ear infections. The main indication of a bad ear infection is the smell; also if you massage his ear canal you can sometimes hear a liquid sound. If you have either of these I would recommend getting a swab to the vets ASP. It can become very uncomfortable if not painful for the dog.

Sorry Richard,
Just realised you recommended sending a swab to the Vets. I would just like to add, my Vet sent two swabs away to be analysed from my Labrador, £40 each time, they could never pinpoint the infection, every time I went back they recommended a different medication. I spent a small fortune on ear drops, but it still came back. That is until I stopped using the drops and just let my other dogs take it in turns to clean his ears with their Tongues. His ears have never been better.

Hi, the ear infection can also be a yeast infection and in this case the ear will not smell like fish but like a cheesy old sock. The symptoms are usually, brown ear wax, inflamation because of the scratching and lots of discomfort for your friend. My weim had infection over infection until I found a site on the web which indicated that the problem could be food allergies. Bingo, that was the answer for me and I give her Nutro's Natural Choice Dog Food. Also, I clean her ears with half white vinegar = half water solution every 1-2 weeks. Hope that helps.
But be sure that its not a bacterial infection because bacteria loves vinegar!
