Somewhere I heard that when a large dog particularly a GSD or GSD mix starts to bunny hop it indicates the hips are going. Right now my eight year old GSD/Malamute is starting to bunny hop and no longer jumps on the furniture/bed. What can I do to make her more comfortable and what is the recommended dosage of asprin? because of my budget, surgery is not an option.

Hi Dennis, Could have something to do with his hips or his back. If you can, I'd get him to a orthopedic / neorologist. There are some great Rx meds available now. I'm looking in my old records to see what I used prior to resorting to Rx & then surgery & will pm you as soon as I can find my records. Do you currently have him on any vit/supp like MSM, Vit E, etc.?
I've been feeding her Nutro and canned mackeral, I havn't seen any unusualy wear on the toe nails. She's been getting slower to get up and lay down and no longer charges the fence when visitors show up or flies after squirrels or cats. If the vet will give me a RX for some good dope I'd gladly pay for that. The vitamin suppiments I'm not too sure about, I thought for sure the Nutro and fish would give her everything.

I only can go on my own experience (Connie are you out there?...You know about supplements) anyway, My dogs' ortho guy had me put my dog on MSM & Vit E & some others, I'm trying to find the list), and yes there are some good pain meds your vet can help you with, and of course NSAI's are very helpful, but your vet will tell you what can't be mixed with what. The toenail thing can be a dead giveaway to disc problems, so watch for that (not quite picking up the back feet can first become evident with a little change in which the nails wear down). If you can, take your dog swimming.

Also, if it is a disc thing, your vet might want to Rx a short course of steroids inorder to take any swelling out of the spinal cord, so really, I'd first go to vet, then start meds (you can't mix steroids with a lot of other stuff).

Dennis, the best thing is to just get her to the doc. It's good & could prevent a little problem into turning into something big. My last GSD broke some discs in his back when he fell off a tub onto his back on cement(8+ yrs, like yours), but he didn't show any sign of a problem for a number of weeks. (he didn't cry, limp, or anything)! My regular vet thought it was degenerative myolapothy, sent me to neorologist who discovered the damaged discs. I was so glad it was a "fixable" problem.
