my puppie is now 16 wks old and we have been trying to housebreak him for a while. he only uses it in the house at night. but he doesnt eat at night, and we take him out before we go to sleep. can someone give me some pointers?
I went through the same thing a few months back, try crating your pup at night. Also, take the water from her around 7 or 8 and take her out right before you put her in her crate for the night. Soon as you wake up in the morning, make sure you take her outside as soon as you wake up. How old is she? My vet told me the rulf of thumb is one hour + 1 hr for every month they are old. So if 2 months old they will need to go out every 2-3 hrs. Also, when she goes outside, praise like heck, and ignore her when she goes inside... good luck!
Don't know if this will be useful but when I brought my GSD home at 8 weeks (he's now 11 months), I followed the guide of taking him outside: 2 mos old, take out every 2 hours; 3 mos old, take out every 3 hours, etc. It worked for me. I work from home so I am fortunate that I could follow that schedule almost like clockwork. He only had 3 or 4 accidents in the house but they were entirely my fault. I missed my self-imposed deadline <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> ! You said, "he only uses it in the house". I don't know what you mean by that? A wee-wee pad or whatever they're called? I never used them so I can't comment on that. Hope this helps.
Hi Gabriel, are you crating your dog? Crating is the key. I've had good luck by taking the dog out every 4 hrs. around the clock at the beginning, then right back in the crate, and if you're consistent the dog should learn really fast, there's articles on the board to tell you all the things to do, my dogs live in the house so that's the first and most important thing for them to learn! A good rule of thumb is if you don't have your eyes on the dog, it's in the crate, always, the pup will catch on quick,
Good luck,
