I walk inside my house and my 13 month old GSD is howling to the sound of my future mother in-law leaving a message on the answering machine, the answering machine was cranked up really loud for some reason, anyway just and interesting observation and was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" /> JC

One was similar to yours. I adopted an elderly (age 15) Bichon Frise a few years ago when her lifelong owner had to transfer to a place where dogs could not be. I came in from outside one day to find her howling her little heart out because he was on the phone, leaving a message. (The howl of a Bichon Frise is very low and soft, BTW.) I've never heard my GSD howl, but my Pug's training club has had a strange experience. One of the other Pugs brought his housemate, a Beagle, with him to a meeting. The Beagle taught the Pugs how to howl. I had never heard a howling Pug, but now I have heard more than twenty of them. They didn't all give it a shot, but more than half did, I think. (The howl of a Pug is also pretty soft, but definitely louder than the Bichon Frise.)

That was an old Norwich that moaned like the devil in a well whenever a bitch in season was in the neighborhood. My GSD howls at the tornado warning siren (seasonal <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />, the pOlice /amblance/fire truck sirens (daily occurances) old dogs LOVE to learn new tricks

One GSD will start and then the rest will join in for the howl off. One of my GSDs does not like the tone on my cell phone, very difficult to talk with a dog howling in the back ground!

My question is, what causes this? Is he singing the blues along with us? Is he offended? Is he hurt? Is he WHAT? He actually seems to enjoy himself when he "participates", doesn't appear to be in pain. My friend said it (the instigating noise) is actually hurting the dogs' ears. Is this true? I enjoy him singing along, he also does it to I believe it is the 4th Symphony by Mozart--(only that song) on the CD!!! I have to say, the motherinlaw message takes the cake though. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
