I stated in a prevoius post that I just recently ( this past week) switched over my 68lb bitch from a commercial diet to an all natural diet,
I have a question about how many omega 3 pills to give per day. I have read serveral articles on leerburgh and found a contradiction. The first is here http://leerburg.com/diet2.htm under the 65 pound female, the guide lines say 2 omega per feeding; I assume. This next article here ( http://leerburg.com/diet.htm ) states one omega pill per 10lbs of body weight, so that would mean roughly she would get 6-7 pills per day. I was wondering if someone could shed some light.. Thanks <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

This is too vague to answer, because Omega 3 EFAs "come in" many forms. Salmon oil, flaxseed oil, and even capsules and tablets.
I use salmon oil (not fish LIVER oil, but fish muscle oil), and I use the recommended amount for a human, adjusted for the dog's weight.
So, for example, if it says 1 tsp. for a human, I assume that's a 150-pound human, and thus a 50-pound dog would get 1/3 tsp. minimum, and so on.
IMO, this works for any form of Omega 3 sources that I can think of.
The reason I don't give the mixed-source Omega 3 EFAs is because I have dogs with allergies, and I know that some dogs are allergic to flax seeds. But this is definitely *not* universal by any means. I would guess that most dogs are not allergic to flax seeds; they certainly are not on the list of the most common canine allergens.
Don't forget the Vitamin E that dogs use up in processing oil supplements!

My 95lb gsd gets 4 salmon oil capsules per day (1200mg) I drain 2 in the am and 2 in the pm meals. FYI - I noticed a big difference in his coat when I switched to salmon oil from flaxseed oil - Salmon oil is much much better. He no longer sheds between seasonal coat blowing was the biggest differnence I noticed - that and how shiny his coat is. He also gets 400iu vitamin E total per day (I drain one 200iu capsule with each meal) you need the vit E with the salmon oil.

I have just started to add Grizzly Salmon oil (4 pumps for a 85 pound dog) and have not had time to notice the difference other then that he loves the taste. Is there a preference for the capsules over this liquid product? Is your vit E from the pharmacy? Thanks.

I agree. There's a reason, too: The long-chain Omega 3s are found almost exclusively in marine products.
I take both sources myself, but give my dogs just the salmon oil.

By the way, any suggestions on Vitamin E from my understanding, Vitamin E is Vitamin E.. Correct me if I am wrong. Thanks

IMHO, no. What matters to me is that the fish oil is pharmaceutical quality distilled oil. The reason for this is: Distillation leaves behind the heavy metals (mercury, for example).
Pure distilled fish oil, btw, has no fishy or rancid smell or taste. If it does, then (IMO) you don't want to use it.
I use the same one I give the dogs.
This URL will take you to a site that lists fish oil companies that voluntarily comply with a monograph requiring the high standards I care about. There are a few companies that are still excellent but haven't bothered with the list, but there are MANY on the list -- enough so you can find a source (or many) no matter where you live.

My Vitamin E and fish oil are from a natural foods store, but pharmacies also have plenty of choices of different IU sizes of Vitamin E caps, as well as choices of type. I like to get mixed tocopherols, to cover all the bases.

I like to use mixed tocopherols, and the difference in price is very small.
