I have recently been given the opportunity to be in K-9 for drug enforcement for our Sheriff's department. I have been trying to determine the best dog for me and the department. Our Sheriff is steering away from the shepherd and looking at other breeds. I have heard that weimaraners have an excellent scents of smell. How are they as drug dogs?
If you dont want a jackal looking land shark (Mal) <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> then try a traditional single purpose dog if the GSD is out (Why, I dont want to know). I had a Weimereiner for a very short time so I cant comment on their workability. Any type of Lab or retriever with the proper drive will fill the bill. If you find one of those grey dogs with the correct drive and fair price, then give it a go. Theres a guy on here who works a Border Collie drug dog I think who has done well for himself. In the end it will come down to you if you are paired with a good dog. Good luck
I have seen good Labs , assorted Spaniels , Golden Retrievers and Mutts as single purpose detectors dogs . I've also seen good GSD's and Mals .
If I worked a single purpose Narc. Dog I would prefer a less intimidating breed . Having worked 2 dual purpose Patrol/Narc. GSD's I found it sometimes difficult to bring them into some situations (homes mostly and vehicles) where the occupants got worked up seeing the dogs . I feel it's much easier to use a less intimidating breed for this , espescially when you are counting on the suspect/s cooperation .
My favorite is the Lab for this . I trained my hunting dog on most of the odors in about a week as I was training my first patrol partner (GSD) .
I feel it's all a matter of preference since many breeds have what it takes to do the job and the local pounds are good places to find potential candidates .
I also am a K-9 officer and i have trained numerous dog for narcotics detection. Malinois are great for that type of work. Shepherds are also good but I lean more to Malinois. Once you see one work you will look no further
