Malik is quite vocal, normal for a GSD (1 yr old), and we more or less let him express himself as long as it's not too much. I use "no bark" with a finger over my mouth when I want him quiet, that works ok, at least he knows there is no reason to bark.
Lately, we have had to sleep with the window shut at night, which I hate, as he barks at any sound: coyotes 3 miles away, a neighbor who talks, the owls that have been hooting alot. The "no bark" command doesn't work the best as he keeps barking low, but enough that we can't sleep. My hb said we should use our e-collar a few times to let him now he has to be quiet. I don't like the idea, what do you think?
As a note, we are not worried about thieves or strangers coming in, we live in a very safe area, and rarely even lock the door at night, or during the day, so protection is not exactly a factor.
A collar works well. Using other ideas may be a little harder. due to the fact you cannot reach him yourself tyo correct him. He may tend to test you to see how much he can get away with. A bark collar usually lets him know quickly that you still are in charge even at a distance. But it is a decision you will have to make for yourself. I know alot of people don't like e-collars.
We already have an e-collar and like it fine. But someone told me today that they were training their dog to be selective in their barking. By that they meant that when the dog barks, they tell him "show me" and they just laugh of walk away when it's nothing. If it's something of interest, like a car in the driveway, they praise him. Apparently it takes time but the dog seems to be much better at when to bark. So we are going to try this. I am somehow suspecting that he may be more trying to figure out the "protection" thing, since he's a year old, rather than test us. We'll see.
