FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) -- A jury found an Army dog handler guilty Tuesday of abusing detainees at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison by terrifying them with a military dog, allegedly for his own amusement.
Sgt. Michael J. Smith, 24, was found guilty of six of 13 counts.
IMH and Uniformed opinion, what a crock of shite, boo hoo the corporal made the terrorist/insergent uncomfortable. I was made more uncomfortable in Basic Training and ShellBack initiation. What shouldn't of gone past NJP went to Courts Martial just to appease the liberal press and other associated crybabies
It never seems to be covered that almost all these incidents occurred in the maximum security part of the prison where the really nasty ones were kept. These prisoners routinely fought, rioted, bit and even threw their own feces at the guards. A bunch of "sh***ers and spitters" to quote a bad movie. If they felt the need to act that way, I say a little fear was in order; or a lot.
Sadly, I think most of these convictions are more about politics than anything else.

Very F'in sad, very sad indeed, sometimes the movie with Micheal douglas, "FALLIN DOWN" Looks sooooo freakin good!!
I just read abou this and I'm a little shocked. I can't believe the sentences that these soldiers have gotten or face. This one in particular faces 24.5 years in prison! If the story is complete the dog never even touched any prisoners, just scared them. One of the other soldiers got ten years for making the prisoners lay naked on each other!
We have sex offenders and murderers that spend less time behind bars.
I think the sentence is too long but the man is responsible for his actions and they are really quite sad.
I very much dislike the idea of using working dogs to torture or interrogate people. It is not one and the same with defence or apprehension, tracking, detection...
It makes one wonder if there should be a code of ethics of the use of working dogs that stands above militaries and governments, at least at the level of persuasion.

Andrew I can not disagree more, we are at war with terrorists who brutaly torture and murder women, children and peace activists with the expressed goal of establishing a religious fascism thru out the world. That soldier showed restraint by not letting the dog take a groin bite
I also have to disagree with what the man did. I don't see that as something an American service man should do. It is disgusting, but I also don't think that the sentence is deserved.
