Have a 15 week old GSD, besides being a handful - this little fellow has a problem w/ car/motion sickness. I have always had dogs - only this is the first one I have had ever get sick from riding in a vehicle. It makes no difference if he is watching outside go by or laying down in his kennel. Is this something he may grow out of / is there a medication I can give him - asking, never had this problem before.
Hello Mark,
My little girl had a rough time adjusting to the vehicle too. I just kept taking her out on the road with me and now she's a pro! She went from vomiting, to heavy salivation, to some really noxious (raw diet) belches (my co-workers stayed out of the van for a while ). It took about 3 weeks for the adjustment.
Advice is: Don't feed before car rides (but do keep hydrated), keep in a crate until adjusted, and put the crate in line with the vehicle, so the pup won't be rocking side to side. Start out with short, smooth drives and work your way up. Stop during the drive, take the pup out and have a play session (so it doesn't seem all that torturous)and continue on your merry way!
I don't like to rely on medications, but maybe a piece of ginger or a bone to chew on may help.
Good Luck!
I agree with everything Maggie said. By the way. What kind of vehicle do you drive? The reason I ask is that my 4yo female gets sick when she rides in a "luxury car". If she is in the Lincoln Town Car she is very sick. BUT if she rides in my 4runner or the pick-up she is fine. She just can't handle the rocking motion of the big cars.
I drive a pickup truck and I carry the kennels in the rear. When I first got this guy 3 weeks ago, he tossed his cookies just 1/2 mile from home, then the second time about 2 miles and the 3rd was another 2 hours (we had a 6 hour drive home).
I have taken him on a couple short rides since we've been home (vet visits), with no problem. Yesterday we drove 6 miles out into the country, let him out to run for awhile, drove home and around town for about 1/2 hr, went to get him out of kennel and "oh my" a mess to clean up.
My GSD "Blue" seems to be always car sick when we travel to our holiday let. It is about 1 1/2 hours travelling time. Cleaning up is the last thing you want to do when you reach your destination. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
I got some Johnson's Travel Capsules for Dogs for him and we've been twice now with no sickness.I don't feed him in the morning before we set off and give him 3 of these capsules in a little bit of ham and he's been fine. These are a herbal remedy and harmless and it says on the box that if the journey is very long you can repeat the dose if you notice your dog is starting to be uncomfortable.
They have worked for Blue and I hope you can get these in your location.
