Hi,
Have been lurking for sometime, but thought I better jump in. We just got a Decker Rat Terrier, 11 weeks old now. Anyone familiar with this breed? I have heard that they can be used for Schutzund. Here is a pic. with him and our shepherd. 9 1/2 bitch from the old DDR lines. So much to learn about training! I know this site will be most helpful! Oops, I see I can't post an image unless it is on a website.

Hi Carol,
Yes, I have a Decker Giant. My Grandmother bred him. At his prime he was 26#, not that big but he more than made up for it in attitude!! His name is Buddy and he'll be 17 years this May. Buddy was the first dog I trained from the ground up, although it was just basic OB and tricks. He still will perform if he's in the mood. I'd love to know where you got you Decker. I swore I would never have a Terrier (Terror) again but now that Buddy is so old I cannot imagine being without one.
Your Shepherd biich, is she 9 1/2 years? I just got my first Shepherd also DDR, he's 9 weeks old.

Hi Jamie,
Wow 17 yrs. old, that's great! I wish my shepherd would live that long. We got a Decker from Eli Brown, author of "The Decker Rat Terrier" he is in Kentucky. Great breeder and wonderful person. This is my first Terror! I've always had German Shepherds, and when our bitch is gone will get another one I'm sure. I had just heard so many good things about these Deckers, and we wanted a smaller dog as our second house dog. Wish us luck! He has great prey drive...and food drive! But he also stops, listens and I think is trying to be good! Where did you get your DDR...I bet he is wonderful!

Bob, sounds like you have some terrier experience. Would be curious to know what training methods you used with yours. I hope he doesn't end up training me!

Did you get that from his name?! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
I'm just kidding you. My granddogs are working earth dogs, too, and OED Bob gave me some excellent pointers to relay last summer/fall. My daughter is their handler, but she's new at it.
Terriers are very good at training humans, BTW, so take heed! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Yep, it was all in the name! I don't think Decker Rat Ts are considered earth dogs. But being a terrier I'm sure some training would be the same. I hope Bob will pass on some thoughts to me! Hint hint! The Deckers are suppose to be calmer than the regular Rat Terrier, and certainly more so than a Jack R. We don't plan to hunt with him, just want a good all round companion dog. We are now debating whether to do in-kennel training (which I don't think Ed approves of), or attend group classes, or have a prof. trainer come to us. Any thoughts on this?

You will get good solid suggestions from OED Bob, I'll bet! I'm pretty sure his terriers were/are mainly BTs and JRTs, but I certainly could be wrong.
I know BTs best.
About training: I would get Ed's videos "Your Pup 8 Weeks to 8 Months" and "Basic Dog Obedience" from
http://www.leerburg.com/dvd.htm
and listen to the podcasts in the meanwhile from
http://www.leerburg.com/dogtrainingpodcasts.htm
and you'll be off and running! I used to use parts from about 5 different OB videos, but then someone gave me Ed Frawley's Basic Ob, and it was much more detailed and real than any of the older ones I was using. I'm not saying it's the only good Basic Ob video, but it covers everything, in real life (for me, anyway).
I don't know Decker Rat Terriers. Is that a bloodline of the breed or a different breed, or what? Will he be bigger than the usual RT, or the same.......? Do you have a picture? I'm not knowledgeable about digital photos, but I hear the site "Photobucket" mentioned a lot here.
I've run across a Rat Terrier Club site when I was looking at BT sites:

Thanks Connie,
Yes I have the Basic Dog Obedience video and am ordering the puppy one this week. The Pod casts are great too!
You can learn more about the Decker Rat Terrier at http://www.nrta.com -- there are sections on the Deckers. They are considered a "strain" of the Rat Terrier. We love our guy. He is going to be pretty hefty, maybe around 40#. At 11 weeks he is already about 11" tall. I'll look into the Photobucket site.
Thanks for your help and interest.
