It's not unusual for a GSD's ears to get soft during teething, then stand back up again.

Have you checked the dog's siblings (even from prev. litters) or lineage to see if soft ears are common? It is true many GSDs' ears go up and down during teething, however you should check to see if all dogs related to yours have their ears up NATURALLY. If the dog's relatives have been taped or glued, this indicates a genetically soft ear. My recently deceased GSD (was killed by a pit at only 10 mon. of age) had very soft ears and his NEVER went up. It won't do anything bad to the dog except alter his looks. And, of course, you'll have to answer the perpetual question of "Oh! German Shepherd MIX?"

As long as they're standing when she's at attention, I don't think you have anything to worry about. My pup's right ear was standing at 6 weeks, but his left has just now gotten to about 90% up. As long as they're up by 4 months, you've nothing to worry about. Try adding some additional calcium to your pup's diet while she's teething. Remember, it takes calcium to build cartilage and teeth as well, and the teeth will get the most of it. The more calcium you can add, the more will go to the ears. Also, be careful not to mess with her ears too much or let her roughouse with other dogs, this can break the cartilage of the ears and cause them to fly. Good luck!

Hey Joe (And all the Hendrix fans sing along...)
You're discribing my 4.75 month GSD perfectly! On alert, her
ears are fully erect. I've noticed that they're beginning to
stand straighter - even when she's just laying by my feet
(like right now )
I was going to tape at 5 months, but since they're showing good
signs of being "strong", I think I'm safe with allowing them
to stand on their own.
Unless- at one week after her 5th month - if they fall, even
due to teething, I think I'll tape. But again, right now it
looks like she'll take after her mom - strong straight ears!
God Bless,
Martin

My 6 mth.GSD had standing ears from about 3wks to 2.5 months. When he really started teething they went down. Then sporatically they would stand. About two weeks ago both ears finally stood One question: can't too much calcium harm a pup? How much is the right amount?

beth, good question--i'll be interested to know the CA answer also.
my (almost) 12-wk old pup had ears almost standing (especially when alert, and facing south into a south wind) until about 2 days ago, when he looks like a lab. i suspect there's something else going on here, however: 10 d ago, took him to the vet for a weight/worming/get aquainted visit. 2 d later, he started with a little dry cough, which has progressed to a phlegmy cough, but not constant. i'm thinking he has kennel cough &/or an ear infection which may be causing his ears to drop.
does this make sense to anyone? he has an app't saturday for vax/worming, but i think there will be no vax this trip. i'm gonna call the vet tomorrow and see what he thinks (if we should come in sooner than sat). pup's appetite is pretty good, but not chowing down all his food either.
input? Mods--if this should be moved to "health issues", feel free.....

The incubation period for kennel/canine cough is 12-14 days.
Coughing can be caused by roundworm infestations and coccidiosis.
Pup's ears drop in times of stress (like teething).
As usual, see what your vet says....

I would tend to think that with teeth coming in,worming, and cough that all of this may contributing to the pup's ears not standing. I bet after these issues are resolved the ears will stand. See what the vet says.
