My puppy is sick I hope someone can please help me.
It all started when I got off work and came home to find my 12 week old GSD puppy had thrown up in his kennel. I took him outside, and he seemed kind of sluggish. (He is a high drive dog.) When he went outside, he went to the corner of the yard, and started digging a hole, and threw up again. I then took him to my vet. They vet said he couldn't find anything wrong, and gave him a shot, and gave me some medicine. (to make him less natious.) He told me to come back in the morning if he was still sick.
I went out to eat, and when I came back, he had throw-up on his ears. (kind of snotty looking.) I then took him to the emergency vet. He looked him over and said he couldn't find anything wrong, then he started saying all these things that costed a lot of money. (I got the feeling he was trying to take my money.) He then said we should atleast do a parvo test. After he brought him back, and while we were waiting for the test results, he pooped in the room and it was diarreah. (He had had solid stools all day.) He did the test and when he came back there was a light blue line next to the dark one. (He had gotten his second set of vaccinations last monday.) He said that since it was only 4 days after the vaccination that it could be from the vaccination. He told me that we should keep him over night and all of these there were all these expenses.
I have taken him to petsmart a couple of times, but it was after his second set of vaccinations. COuld this of infected him with Parvo? This is the only way I can think of that he could of gotten it.
What else could it be?
Someone please help!
THanks!

...COuld this of infected him with Parvo?
I'm not an expert, but I have had two dogs who contracted Parvo.
One died, one survived. The telltale sign - for me at least - is
the smell of the poop. If it smells "bloody", then I'd not
take any chances! At a minimum, the vet will do an I.V.
Let us know how it goes!
God Bless,
Martin

I hope this is not the case. Puppies are very vulnerable to infections. That is why I never take my puppies out in public until at least 6 months. They go to the vet in a crate in and out and I go back in to pay. You never know what is in the store. Hope all works out!

What do you mean by smells bloody? When he had diarreah in the vet in smelled real bad, but it just smelled like strong poop.

The diarrhea - VERY RUNNY - didn't smell like dog poop. It smelled
literally like blood. I really don't have a good example of it,
but I can honestly say that I will NEVER forget that smell!
God Bless,
Martin

I'm not clear about whether he stayed at the hospital. Did he? If not, he should go right back, IMO.
If it's Parvo, IV fluids can keep him alive.
From http://www.workingdogs.com/parvofaq.htm :
QUOTE: Many people just assume that any case of diarrhea in a dog is from parvovirus. This is not true. There are a lot of other diseases and disorders that lead to diarrhea. If you have a puppy, don't take any chances. Have your puppy examined by your vet if diarrhea is a factor in any disease. It is better to be safe than to be sorry.
If your dog becomes infected with parvovirus, he has about a 50-50 chance of survival. If he makes it through the first three to four days, he will usually make a rapid recovery, and be back on his feet within a week. It is vital, however, that he receives supportive therapy immediately. It must be stressed that this is not a bad case of doggy flu; without medical treatment, most puppies die. END

...If it's Parvo, IV fluids can keep him alive.
My first dog I've owned since I was a teenager (20 years ago)
died of parvo. We caught it too late. I am the first to admit
that I was ignorant of both dog medical care & vacinations.
I actually took him to the vet, and they gave him back to me
with a "parvo home medical kit". My wife and I stayed up all
night with him, holding the I.V. bag/changing the old I.V.
for a new one. He didn't improve, so we took him back the next
day. While we were with him, they put him to sleep while we
held him.
Our female puppy caught parvo right after Buddy passed away.
This time, we were VERY ADIMANT about our vet keeping her,
and treating that wicked desease!
With fast diagnosis and speedy treatment, SHE SURVIVED!!!!
BTW, Buddy was a Brittney Spaniel, and Star (we still have
her <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> ) is a Border Collie.
If my Sable, GSD bitch, EVERY EVEN SHOWS A HINT OF illness,
I act fast.
Please, don't take chances - the Vet is your best bet!
God Bless,
Martin

Have you tried contacting the breeder? They may have seen similar cases and could provide helpful information.

I did not keep him at the hospital because it would of costed atleast $500. I took him home, and watchd him carefully, he seemed to improve a little and by the morning he was drinking water again and not throwing up. But he still had wattery dirreah. I took him to the vet, and he said I should leave him with him till Monday to be on IV's. So I left him with the vet. The vet told me that he doesn't think it is Parvo.
