I'm currently training a 3yo female GSD and she has runny eyes, clear and thick. no nasal discharge, no temp and weight is good. She isn't rubbing them. Her energy level is good. kept outdoors in a kennel. This is in Virginia so the allergy season is just getting started. Any ideas on what's causing this and treatment? Been going on since I took her home two weeks ago.

Dry eye results in thick tears because the water portion of the tears that protect and clean the eye surface is lowered, leaving the mucous/oil portion (so think and noticeable).
The first indications of this (keratoconjunctivitis sicca) are what you are describing. It can be treated, but if not treated, the secretions will turn gooey and yellow and the cornea, trying to protect the eye, will turn opaque and brownish. It can result in blindness.
I'm not saying this is what it is -- obviously, I would have no way of knowing even if I were a medical professional -- but I just wanted to say that I have seen this malady, and since it could be what you're looking at, you need to call the vet. (JMO!)
I believe it has many possible causes, including distemper, genetics, antibiotics, a head injury --- a whole laundry list. But I have also read that treatment has improved a lot in the last decade.
the vet can do a test for dry eye - as Connie said - this can be very serious and result in injury to the eye and blindness. Requires multi-daily eye drops, probably for her lifetime if it is dry eye. If it's allergies, I know from living in VA for 14 years - could be allergies to pollen, or etc floating around in the air. Not sure what you could do about that except keep an eye on her eyes, if she's otherwise healthy and feeling ok.
I had a dog whose eyes would get red and irritated after being out in high grass or in very dusty winds. Just a rinse with saline solution would solve that problem for her. Sounds like something more going on here. Dry eye can be extremely serious, but there are some new medications that have really improved the outlook for a lot of dogs.
