I was just wondering, not trying to cause any controversy (or maybe I am?). I was wondering wich dog is more for protection. Are they both equal what are some ups and downs on both?

Personally I think it is a matter of preference. The dog has to have the nerve and drive to be a PPD. My Mal is Search and Rescue but I think she will be naturally protective when she matures. IMHO, I am a Malinois person and love the challenge. I am not a trainer so a specific answer on temperments and drives will have to be answered by someone else, but it took me a long time to make the decision between a GSD and a MAL. After watching Law Enforcement training with the Mals and discussing it with my trainer, I chose the Mal and will never go back. (I will always have a Bloodhound around because they are just DANG fun to run on trails)

Seeing both breeds work, I prefer the Mal myself. I think that they are more tenacious than *most* shepherds I've seen. They also don't seem to hesitate like I have noticed shepherds doing--BUT I do have to say that shepherds are generally smarter, so they are more thorough and methodical. I think a lot of the hesitation I see (in GSDs) is the dog thinking about what is happening and how it is going to take care of the situation, whereas the mal doesn't care if that unmovable, solid tree is between it and the bad guy...
Also, in my experience only, the mals seem to have a much better grip than the GSDs, and don't seem to let go as easily. On the flip side, GSDs seem to listen better than mals. But that is what makes the Mal more fun, like Carol mentioned.
This is just MY opinion, like I said. I am getting a new dog soon, and I probably won't even look at the GSDs, unless there is one really outstanding one available.

LOL! I guess I should have known better. Maybe the search button could come in handy? Yeah, but that's just me.
Well anyways, I was just curious because I love German Sheps and was wondering about Mal since I really didn't know much about them tell now.

well while it is here...I have the "duty" at my highschool I teach at to escort the drug dogs as they bring them throught the highschool and parking lot, I use to see alot of GSDs , however the last few companies that have got the contract have had exclusively Mals...This is my first time being around Mals...they seem to have more "drive" than the "average" GSD, and it doesnt seem to diminish even after an hour of searching,...and they are uglier than the ugliest GSD...Even the thin , gangly am. GSD. Sorry , a little off subject...on another string...they seem to alert alot, however seldom do we find drugs

There is nothing quite like looking at a mouthful of nice white teeth against a black mask and that look of "What can I do next, huh, huh, huh....Give me something to do or I will eat the couch, I promise..."

Well, just to add on, which breed tends to be cheaper? Compared to each other equally as possible.

I'd say mals are DEFINITELY cheaper. You can get a GOOD mal for under $400 USD if you look hard enough, especially if you couldn't care less about papers. That said, after having worked with mals since my intro to the working world, my next personal dog is a GSD.
They may have a little less drive on average, but I believe good GSD's are out there (mine is coming from Zwischensee Kennels in Manitoba, Canada) they're just harder to find and more expensive than good mals.
They're also MUCH prettier. Though my own malinois is gorgeous, I find most deserve the name they're affectionately called here... "Swamp collies" :-)
