I just happened to look in my 3 year olds mouth and his back teeth are covered ( i mean ALOT) with plaque or tarter, im not sure what the difference is, at first i thought it was food caked on his teeth but it's stuck on there good ( i tried scraping it off with my finger nail ), i called the vet and he said they have to knock him out and take it off with ultra sound, has anybody heard of this? I don't know how i missed this problem, it's bad.
Thanks,
AL

I use doggie tooth paste and brush my GSDs teeth daily, too. Every year they have check-ups with the vet for their teeth.

My post wasn't about if i should take my dog to the vet or not, i was curious about using ultra sound and if anyone has had an animal with their teeth cleaned using that process,

I haven't ever had any experience with ultra sound being used on teeth <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> Would like to know more, though.

Al, ultrasonic cleaning of teeth is a common vet procedure ( actually, the tech's usually do the procedure )
The dog is put under and the vet does an oral exam to see if any teeth are in need of repair/removal.
Then an ultrasonic probe ( with a water jet providing a flush during the procedure ) is applied to the plaque areas, especially at the gum line. The hunks of plaque fall off, and then the teeth are usually scrapped.
After scrapping, the teeth are polished with an abrasive polish to smooth the enamel surface.
The dog is allowed to awaken, and bingo - clean teeth!
This procedure is for older dogs, by the way - most canines won't develop a level of plaque that needs this procedure until they're at least four years old.
