My goals include titling my GSD in SchH, PSA, and ASR. I have seen LOTS of SchH, have a good club, and I'm completely confident we'll obtain a SchH3. I'm also familiar with PSA, have trained with PSA clubs and seen PSA trials and am pretty comfortable that I will be able to cross train with a little proofing, environmental desensitizing, and suit work (which I can travel for and get after the SchH foundation has been done).
My concern here is more with ASR, and how it will be affected by work in SchH and PSA. My MAIN concern is with the SchH tracking, and how it will mess up my search/building search work in ASR. And also any other ways people who cross-train have found these sports affected one another...
And ALSO... Has anyone noticed that ASR folks don't like to be cold?! I looked for a club/trial within a day's drive, and you folks are all down south, haha!
Looks like PSA will be the best we can do (at least there are enough trials up here that we can title in one season) unless something changes by the time we're ready.
Your tracking for Sch will NOT cause you a problem with ASR. Quite the opposite. The basic footstep tracking that is imperative for Sch will do nothing but benefit you for the woods and building in ASR. As long as the dog is eager for the bite, it's not an issue. The decoy will charge the dog, once he/she knows the dog is committed. This breaks the dog from 'track' mode.
I've got a neat story about a 'tracking' trained dog and a decoy for ya. PM me.
The Sch folks that we have cross over to ASR do EXTREMELY well in these exercises because of the extensive tracking training that they do.
And YES....ASR folks do NOT like to be cold Especially the Evaluators...makes it hard to write.
PSA is an excellent test for a dog/handler team. Be ready for those OB distractions!
Jennifer,
You've discovered one of the deep, dark, secrets of ASR - our intense fear of cold.
And it's all Scott's fault.
Well his dog's, actually.
You see, Scott's dog steals our hats. Yep, you read that right, no one in ASR is able to wear a hat due to Scott's dog Tonka - hence we all get chilled and are forced to live in southern States.
Well I sincerely hope it takes off up here, even if Rochester NY is the closest we get. I can make it down there once every couple of months for a weekend, and should be enough (plus the stuff I do on my own) to compete.
I've got the obedience part no prob, it's just the decoys I need. Our SchH club doesn't even OWN a suit. And it's just generally accepted that no one even suggests such a thing!
Jenn
P.S.
Scott, PM my your story... I tried to PM you last night but got an error. Thx.
