My pup (4 month Rott)has developed a sore on his rump. It started as just an itch and now there is a small patch where the hair is gone. He seems to scratch an awful lot too. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.

Hi Walt,
Seen any fleas or evidence of fleas??
If not, I know you are feeding a raw diet....one of my dogs can't tolerate alfalfa at all.(don't know if you are adding that or not) She scratches like mad....
Or was he vaccinated recently? Just some places to start looking for the cause. Let us know!
Give little Yogi a hug for me.

Hi Cindy. I don;t think it's fleas. The itching has been going on for a while (seems like almost since he got here) and it's still been a little cool here for the fleas to start up. He hasn't been vacinated in a while, in fact he's due for his last shot this weekend. The alfalfa could be it, I feed it. What are some alternatives to alfalfa? He's in the crate now but I'll hug him later! He's 30 lbs. now (he was about 12 when you saw him) but I still think he's cuddly looking. Thanks.

For my dog that can't tolerate alfalfa, I just leave it out. If he were my puppy, don't know if I would have him vaccinated while his system is stressed (as evident from the scratching)
You can go to http://www.b-naturals.com and get a complete vitamin blend minus the alfalfa. I use it a couple times a week.....it's called Berte's Immune Blend.
For my other dogs that don't have issues with alfalfa, I use Berte's Daily Blend.
Just some ideas for you. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Cindy,do you think a puppy of Walt's pup's age could go through sort of a detox or is it to young?Did your breeder feed raw Walt? The reason I am asking is because my Rottie pup got, what sounds like, exactly the same thing a little after I got her.I kept feeding natural held off on vaccinations a bit while still staying in the window for parvo vacc.(very important for Rotties)and the sore disappeared and hasn't come back and she is no longer itchy. If your breeder fed natural too then this can't be it but mine was feeding Eukanuba.

The breeder didn't feed raw. Detox sounds like a possibility since he has also been smelling "doggy" lately. I got him on 12/30 and have always fed raw. How long would it take for detox to show up?

I am not completely sold on the idea of detox..just my personal opinion though FWIW. What exactly are you feeding him, Walt? Maybe he just needs some extra fat or oil in his food? Do you use grains at all?
My son's 4 year old Corgi got what I thought was a hot spot on her rump a few months ago, she has been raw fed since we got her..... I couldn't believe it as even back in the old days when I fed kibble no dogs that I owned had ever had a hot spot. I took her to work and checked her over (I work at a vet's office) and she had impacted anal glands.....she chewed and scratched at her rear end but couldn't reach her butt I guess?? She never did scoot (or as my brother calls it..the booty drag). That's another thing to rule out although uncommon....
Let us know what Yogi's diet consists of though.

Yogi gets any of the following: hamburger meat, chicken gizzards, chicken necks, chicken backs, pork neckbones (mixed results with those so far), chicken livers, kelp/alfalfa, omega 3 fatty acids, vitamin c powder, and beef liver. I started giving him some leg quarters last week. Seems to be working fine. He loves to go in his crate and demolish the bones. He's in the crate a lot during the day. Any chance he could have chewed the spot out of boredom? I doubt it since he seems to itch in general but thought it may be a possibility. Thanks again.

I would remove the alfalfa for now, it may take a while to see the difference. If I forget and give my dog Zen alfalfa once by mistake, she scratches for DAYS.....
Try that and let us know. It may also help to give him a bath, just in case their is anything external irritating his skin.
Keep us posted, Walt! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I forgot to mention that he gets eggs and cottage cheese several times a week. Also, does cutting out the alfalfa mean kelp too (since they're usually mixed)? I have some kelp that hasn't been mixed with the alfalfa yet so I can keep feeding that.
