mrazovac k9 had a great dane listed on their site a lil while back as a PPD, i have the video somewhere, dogs name was "Aris"... based on the great dane's I've seen the dogs couldn't cut it under any type of pressure... maybe I haven't seen enough great danes... but I question a company that uses a breed like that for a REAL "personal protection" dog... I could be wrong. Thoughts??
I think your best bet would be to order some DVDs, etc. NOW instead of waiting to get a dog. Why not contact some PPD trainers in your area or region? They might be able to help you with your decision, and they may be able to help you find the "right" dog for you so you can have that perfect relationship.
Best of luck; I have, too, seen some sompanion-breed dogs listed on the mrazovackk9 site that I would not consider even a decent breed for PPD dogs.
That article has a lot of good points, thanks for the reference to it.
One point the article brings up that I saw somewhere else as well is the concern about getting a sport-trained protection dog that actually gets confused in a real-world situation where the guy getting bitten doesn't have a sleeve. Thats part of why I was looking at the websites of these two businesses, since they claimed to be producing protection dogs specifically. I sure have no use for a dog that would get confused in that way.
And on buying the DVDs (comment regarding a prior post), I would do that before I got the dog, but its still a month or 2 off.
And this sure looked like a good piece of advice too:
"Definitely do not buy a dog sight-unseen. Go and see at least three dogs that have been trained by the individual or company for protection. Meet them, and ask to see them perform in a scenario you set up and not the company!"
Also .. something like $4500 was the most I can afford. I hope that price limitation doesn't mean I'm asking to be let down.
Laura,
I've said this several times in the past, but I think it bears repeating - when you go to look at a dog, take the best decoy/ helper along that you can get your hands on and have him test the dog to *your* satisfaction. Test the potential ppd strongly in defense and civil work ( look carefully at the dog's reaction to civil aggression by a stranger wearing no equipment, that will be important for a ppd, needless to say )
