We are currently shopping for a pup. One kennel we spoke with wanted to sell us a pup with limited registration pending getting titles on the pup. That in itself does not sound unreasonable, but in this case, the parents are not themselves titled. Does this sound a little over the top to anyone else?

Well that begs the question of ... if their not titled, why are they being bred? Obviously there are exceptions to every rule but both parents untitled?
I would discuss it with the breeder. If you have an open relationship, it probably would not be a problem. The stipulation sounds like something they put in there for their pet owners as a 'just in case'.

When I buy a dog, it is my dog and not yours anymore, I do not deal with people that put stipulations on MY dog.
I understand some breeders point with this, I just do not deal with them.
If they want stipulations put on your dog, then tell them you will give them $150 now, and pay the rest after you get a title on the dog. See if they go for that. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I've co-owned a few hunting terriers with the stipulation that I put working titles on them, then the co-ownership would be dropped. I knew the breeders quite well (hunting partners) and had no problem with it.
I'd be leary of doing it without knowing a lot about the particular breeder.

All of our dogs are titled, but we sell our pups with limited-registration, a restriction which we will lift when it passes hip certification and you title your dog in SchH1 or IPO1, or gain a police or rescue title. This requirement was designed to help reduce the many opprotunistic BYB's that want to mix our working bloodlines with showline animals or lines of poor quality. Irresponsible breeders usually don't have alot of time to train and title their animals, they are mostly just intrested in producing puppies. This measure is set up to simply ensure the standards of animals carrying our kennel name.

Thanks for explaining this Daryl!
I was reading this like "What the hell??"
Why would you buy a pup that is co owned/ has limited registration but the breeding thing explains it.
I still don't think I'd be too happy paying all that money for a pup, to raise, title then some cheeky shit says "Hey that's my dog too and you've had your three years now it's my turn!" Could this happen and what would be the Legal position in this case?
Cheers
John

Right. Like I said, I completely understand the reasoning when the parents are proven dogs, but these have no titles. Not even a CD or C.G.C. Nothing. There are certainly titled dogs in the background, but I find it a bit unreasonable to insist on my titling my pup, when they haven't been bothered to title the parents.

Trust me as much as I would like pups I sell to be worked and titled, stuff happens...
So while I understand the limited registration until titled thing, I wouldn't buy them. Sorry just my opinion.
The breeders say they are protecting themselves, their kennel names, blah, blah, blah.
Well what about me mofo????
So many times kennels are here today, gone tomorrow and their websites disappear. What happens when you buy from one of these breeders, then get your dog titled and now they have vanished?
YOU HAVE JUST BEEN SERVED!!!! LOL
