Hello to you all from Minnesota. My name is Dave Curtis and have a small working kennel in the Twin Cities area. I'm currently a K9 handler/trainer for SAR in Minnesota. I'm also starting a new adventure in French Ring. My dog Ata and I hope to see some of you at the up coming Mike Ellis seminar in our neck of the woods in May. Here are some pictures of Ata's first leg bites. http://da-jukennel.com/wst_page16.html
Hello Dave, thanks for sharing the pics of Ata. She appears to be enjoying her first leg bite <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />.
Thanks Mel. She is a fun dog. After following an intense discussion on another couple boards about the strength of dogs that bite legs verses upper body dogs I was pleased to see she had no intial problems.
Interesting transition I'm sure. Glad it went smoothly for you both. Not sure I agree with the leg bite being stronger though.... just a different technique. I like versatility in my PPD dogs to do both.
No this one is not my SAR dog. My first SAR dog was trained in PPD first then crossed trained in SAR. As you can imagine he was constantly under the microscope with the SAR folks waiting for him to erupt and savage every one in sight. When that did not happen and he had the most drive, best obedience, and greatest work ethic they had to admit that that "biting" dog was OK. However when he retired and I started my second dog, they let me know that a non bite trained dog was preferred. I have been on some urban abandon building searches looking for cadavers that I really would have preferred my PPD trained male with me. As for leg bites, Ata was started on a sleeve, then upper body bites and now legs. In one of the pictures the leg sleeve is being presented but she is looking the decoy in the eyes wanting to go up.
I think there is a ring seminar or comp just west of you in Wisconsin , I think Hudson lake is the name. Mabye you allready train with that kennel, Red Star ????
Brad,
Yes I train at Red Star Kennel in Hudson. It is a fun club for many reasons but one is the many different breeds that are being trained there. Mals, bull dogs, boxers, presas, GSDs,and one or two others. You are right about a ring trial in September and a PSA trial in September.
