I am sold on the idea that it is not a good idea to keep vaccinating my dogs yearly. Now that it is getting warmer, I was wondering what I should do about heartworm medication. If I go to the vet I know he will want to vacinate them before he sells me the heartworm meds. Any ideas. Jerry
You have the ability to:
A) refuse vaccines
B) find a new vet
Heartworm prevention is very important. Heartworm infection was a HUGE problem in coastal South Carolina, and it is still a problem in North Carolina even though I live in the Raleigh area (middle of the state). Personally, I would only consider skipping it if I lived in certain areas of Canada and I never traveled south with the dog.
I printed out some journal articles and took them in with me when I went to the vet. If the vet knows that you are doing it for the dog's best interest they shouldn't give you any crap, since the new protocols have been printed in every major journal.

I use ivomec, but I won't post directions in a public forum because it can kill dogs if used improperly or on the wrong breeds (border collies, Australian shepherds, Manchester terriers, skye terriers to name a few).

I've used ivomec for the almost the last 2 years. No problems. Talked to my vet, that's what she used too and she told me what dosage to use. (which I had already known). Some vets won't even discuss it though.
